Do you look like a mental patient? Do people ever tell you you need to eat more?

Beantown Bloggery reports on the next Scorsese film to be made here - and provides details on the casting calls they'll be holding this Saturday at BU. It helps to have "a quirky or unusual character face" (mental patients) or look malnourished and emaciated and be willing to have your head shaved (concentration-camp prisoners). But don't fret if you suffer from good looks - they're also looking for athletic types, especially with gun experience, to play American and German soldiers.

I can't wait for the climactic battle scene on the Longfellow Bridge.

The Longfellow Bridge?

By bobmetcalf | Tue, 01/22/2008 - 4:14pm

Hey Adam, is that the "salt and pepper bridge"
or do I have to call a Boston Globe reporter for
that info? And why do they call it
that anyways?

A Simple Explanation

By SwirlyGrrl | Tue, 01/22/2008 - 4:17pm

The Longfellow Bridge is always shaking and shedding little flecks of black and gray stuff.

I thought it was because the towers on the bridge

By independentminded | Tue, 01/22/2008 - 5:56pm

look like gigantic salt and pepper shakers.

Granted, the Longfellow Bridge is also known for its wind and debris. ughh

It's the sodium

By Gareth | Tue, 01/22/2008 - 5:45pm

They call it the salt and pepper bridge because it's the traditional spot for people who are definitely absolutely not MIT students to throw sodium in the river. The pepper comes from the way it peppers your boat's canopy when it suddenly combusts in your trash barrel.

Call the Globe, you have a future in journalism!

Ya know.....

By independentminded | Tue, 01/22/2008 - 5:20pm

while some of the movies filmed here in Boston have been OK, I'm thinking that most of them are probably not that high-grade. I've seen The Departed, Monument Avenue and Southie, but that's about it.

As much as I find Boston a liveable city, I just don't think it's the best metropolis to film movies in. While we're on the subject of movies, I'll say this: I know everybody on here resents the fact that i have different tastes in films and likes to occasionally talk about it, but other posters, who're unnamed often shut me up. It's clear that many, if not most people consider West Side Story a film for young adolescents, and that I must be somewhat retarded and/or immature because I still have somewhat oldfashioned tastes. Well, I've got news for everybody: First of all, West Side Story is a great film for people of all ages and walks of life, and I'm of average, or perhaps above average intelligence. I have a different style of posting, socializing, conversing, socializing and interacting with people. So what?!? Just because West Side Story came out more than 45 years ago doesn't make it a bad film. Imho, it's a damned great one, and, furthurmore, imho, a wonderful alternative to many, if not most of today's movies, many of which I think are rather bombastic. Sure, there are some good films coming out nowadays, but they're not the majority. They never have been, but there seem to be far fewer good ones these days. Regarding movies--it would be much too much to expect of the film industry to make great films like a lot of the older classics such as WSS, Sound of Music, etc., So, I go to the Brattle and Coolidge or the Davis Square Somerville Theatre when some of these good old classics are playing. I'm not much for sitting home and watching them on a DVD, so I haven't got a DVD player.

So what if I don't like the way Harvey Leonard and Dick Albert sensationalize their broadcasts. I happen to prefer the forecasters who're less bombastic in their forecasting methods and forecast the weather for the upcoming day(s) without all the sensationalism that Leonard and Albert put into theirs.

Snow's pretty, but I just don't like excessive amounts of it. Frankly, I wish Boston, Somerville and other Bay State communities would purchase snow melters to do the job. Snow melters use steam to melt the snow, are known to melt as much as 60 tons of snow per hour, and they work by being hooked up to the sewer system(s). They also filter out trash in the process and the water goes into the sewers. I'm sure the city could save tons of money on snow removal if they did that. Mayor Menino sounds like he needs a reality check, since he refuses to even look into the matter. NYC, from what I understand, has about 20 of the snow melters, and they're used when 6" of snow or more falls. They're $200, 000.00 apiece, and lots of money might well be saved per year on snow removal and ice control.

It would save a lot of grief, fights, and minimize the stupid act of "space saving", which occurs in so many areas. Since this is an area that frequently gets hit with tons of snow, one would think that officials would have a better system of snow removal in place. Unfortunately, nothing was learned from the Blizzard of '78, except how to panic people into crowding the grocery stores and buying out everything there! It's gotten to the point where it's ludicrous. That being said, officials should get off their duffs and consider a better, more efficient, cheaper way to remove snow. Boston and Somerville and Cambridge, for sure, would need more than one snow melter apiece, but, hey, it just might be a good start.

Frankly, maybe I sound somewhat bombastic right now, but I 'll say this: I get sick and tired of people just jumping on me when I say things they don't like, and then pile on me when I stand up to their sarcasm and being attacked. That's hypocrisy at its height, imo. Frankly, if you want to kick me off of this site, I honestly don't give a damn at this point.

What?

Fascinating; some people who mildly criticize someone's obsessive postings on three or four topics get their heads ripped off, while others who take the time to compose a snarky song get away with just a smiley face in response? Where is the justice? Where is the consistency? A boy like that who killed your brother, forget that boy and find another...

You know, it's not so much

By Mollynotloggedin (not verified) | Thu, 01/24/2008 - 11:18am

You know, it's not so much that you have and state your opinions. It's really not. It's that whenever someone ventures an opinion that differs from yours, you haul off and attack with both barrels*, and then you turn around and complain about being attacked.

You want us all to allow you to have your opinions, right? That's cool. So why won't you allow others to have different opinions that yours? Just because someone disagrees with you on an issue doesn't mean they're automatically attacking you personally, you know.

*Yes, I realize I mixed my metaphors here. It's poetic license or something.

I like musicals, too

By cynical | Tue, 01/22/2008 - 5:58pm

Personally, I'm a fan of West Side Story and The Sound of Music. Is that really something you felt persecuted for? That's too bad, but I'm very confused about the context in which you chose to speak your mind, independentminded. That is to say, I don't see any context. Can you help us understand?

Cynical:

By independentminded | Tue, 01/22/2008 - 8:42pm

it's not a matter of "feeling persecuted". It has to do with the fact that, first of all, whenever I've talked about it on some other forums in the past, I've been ridiculed. If many people don't like that sort of film, that's their prerogative, but I was just recently criticized for supposedly ripping into weather forecasters whose sensationalism I really don't care for, and for supposedly raining on the parade of yet another poster who enjoys it when a great big, crippling snowstorm/blizzard hits this area. In all three instances, I've been effectively told to shut up, and yet, when I talk about stuff that I like to sometimes talk about, these same posters have "rained" on my parade. The hypocrisy both here and on WGC, for instance, is disgusting. Frankly, it has something to do with the fact that my different style of posting, etc., clearly does rub certain posters the wrong way. My style of posting is my style of posting...and that's that.

Glad to see that you're also a fan of musicals, cynical. WSS is my favorite film of all times. Although I've enjoyed Sound of Music, I've also got ambivalent feelings about the very story behind it.

Hardly ridiculous

By Gareth | Wed, 01/23/2008 - 5:37am

To be a fan of West Side Story, in my opinion, is hardly ridiculous. It was a truly great movie. I've probably seen it seven or eight times. I've even been in a stage production of it. The movie was a truly historic conjunction of great music, great lyrics, and great choreography. Bernstein, Sondheim, and Robbins? How can you go wrong?

I love musicals. That's my favorite kind of movie. I'm not sure which movie is my favorite ever... The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, maybe. Merde! But my wife's favorite movie is definitely Moulin Rouge. We'll both watch just about any musical, and our 3 1/2 year old son loves to dance afterwards. You should have seen him trying to do the couch trick from Singin in the Rain.

Feel better yet?

I don't think anybody here is making fun of you for liking West Side Story. If they are, then maybe they'll make fun of me for liking Gigi (Sank heaven for leetle gerls...). It probably is your style of posting rather than the content of your posts that sometimes gets you a negative reaction here, for the most part. Spitting out a big rush of non-sequiturs seems strange. Of course, some times you go on and on calling someone names, and that's no fun either.

The whole West Side Story thing

By adamg | Wed, 01/23/2008 - 8:05am

Dates back to pre-history, before Universal Hub, when certain people (yes, more than one) used to use the Wicked Good Conference. It's a long and not very interesting story.

Some folks go to Rocky Horror at Harvard Square every week. And I do recall a sing-a-long West Side Story at the Regent Theatre in Arlington a couple years back.

Don't get me wrong

By Gareth | Wed, 01/23/2008 - 9:09am

West Side Story is great. It's just not the answer to every question.

Hey, Ron.

By independentminded | Wed, 01/23/2008 - 10:04am

The WSS sing-s-long was at the Somerville Theatre in Davis Square, last March. I remember, because I was there.

There lies the rub, Gareth.

By independentminded | Wed, 01/23/2008 - 10:02am

My style of posting is different, and that's what puts people off. Well...my style of posting is me, and that's that.

You were in a stage production of West Side Story?

How cool. What part did you play? Just curious.

Baby John. Community theater, I was 14. Don't go thinking I can sing or anything, though.
