The stupid parking ban in the Fenway

Dave Alpert is one grumpy Fenway resident this morning, what with city towtrucks pulling cars away at the crack of dawn today (well, 8 a.m.), the better to give the tactical units room to move in on the hordes of drunken college students the city expects after the Super Bowl:

... So, why ban the cars? The cars aren't the ones drinking 40s, making noise, raping and pilaging.

Why not just ban the Northearstern students? Not that I think the Northeastern students are bad kids. But, obviously, the police believe they are guilty until proven innocent. Therefore, they are punishing the entire neighborhood. I live in a project building with hard working families, elderly and working stiffs. There are no undergrads here. The neighborhood is full of people like us, and we are continuously made to suffer. I thought collective punishment was against the law in this country. ...

...it's so cars don't get destroyed. Remember the recent Red Sox celebration? Sure, it was tame. But people were still jumping up and down on cars and bashing them to hell.

I'm not agreeing or disagreeing with the tow policy, but I'd probably rather pay a couple hundred to get my car out of the tow lot then to deal with the hassle of my car getting flipped and the windshield windows smashed.

I was running some errands in Allston this morning and noticed there were "no parking" signs for "special event sunday 8am to monday 2am" from the bottom of Harvard Ave at Cambridge Street that went at least to Comm Ave and on Brighton Ave to Packard's Corner and who knows how far in the other direction. It looked like they were only just hung so I have no idea how much warning people actually got... Stadium Towing was doing quite an efficient job of removing the cars - with six hours before kick-off they must have quite a meaty contract with the city. Too bad they are bullies behind the wheel, and are especially hostile to people on bikes.

No, the signs weren't just posted Sunday morning - they were there Friday when I came home from work. Still annoying given the general lack of alternative parking in the neighborhood, but there was in fact advance warning.

And yes, I assumed that the ban was more to protect parked cars from harm than to keep things quiet by forbidding parking. There has been serious damage done to cars in the Harvard & Comm./Harvard & Brighton neighborhood in past years.
