Don't leave a $3,000 laptop sitting on a table at the library

There's a good chance it won't be there when you get back.

Different library?
The Brookline Public Library is on Washington Street, not Heath Street. That address is probably a library at Pine Manor College.
This is why you should never ask me for addresses
Yes, you're right, and I've changed the headline, thanks. Same principle applies, though (also? never leave your laptop on the front seat of an unlocked car).
Never leave your laptop on
Never leave your laptop on the front seat of your car, period. People will just break the window to grab stuff that's visible.
really?
should i take my GPS off the dashboard? what if i leave my credit cards in my cupholder? bad idea?
don't leave a GPS visible in your car
Lots of smash-and-grab going on in Somerville and other places, looking for GPSen, iPods, laptops, cellphones, anything that's small and portable and easily fenced.
Hancock Village on the Brookline / West Roxbury line
Just don't even think about it.
Brookline Smash and Grab map (about a week out of date, however).
In Central Sq
Cops are telling people to not only hide the GPS, but
to make sure that there isn't a tell-tale ring from
the suction cup on the dash. Apparently, that's an
invitation to a broken window and a missing GPS.
Them rings
Yeah, I got them. Maybe I should wash my window. Or maybe I should just keep myself safe in bucolic Roslindale and stay away from Central Square.
Coffee Houses, Too
I could have myself a nice collection of portable apple and pc equipment were I the dishonest type.
It is portable for a reason - so you can unplug it and take it to the can or the counter with you rather than let some ethically-challenged caffeine head haul away your computer and your precious dissertation too!
Taking your puter to the can
You know what I really miss? My circa 1999 clamshell iBook. The thing had a giant plastic handle built into it, which made it perfect for hanging on the hook on the back of the door when I took my puter to, yes, the can.
When I was in grad school, that laptop was about the only valuable thing I'd ever have on me. I didn't bother with packing up my obviously-worth-nothing-except-to-me ancient backpack of school stuff that would be spewed all over the table, but I'd snatch up just the laptop any time I got up for anything.
(Yes, I know you can get little handle attachments for newer laptops, but nothing will ever compare to having a bigass sturdy handle built right into the thing.)
A police officer walked past
A police officer walked past me just as I sat down to write this post. Apparently a girl at the Emerson library decided to leave her laptop unattended for a minute and got an unfortunate lesson on why that was a really, really bad idea.
People might want to consider you know...keeping an eye on their things and investing in something like Lojack For Laptops.
