An alternative name for Natick's sports teams

Tim F-W proposes a replacement for Redmen:

... According to the Census Bureau, out of the 32,170 inhabitants of Natick, only 134 claim Native American ancestry. If Natick sports fans want to continue the tradition of having mascots named after tribes, why not reflect the actual composition of the town? I humbly suggest the Natick Palefaces. Surely the good citizens of Natick would recognize that name as one without racial overtones at all.

Another knucklehead. I don't suppose he's ever heard of a certain basketball team that wears green. Or a football team down Foxboro way. Or a baseball team that wears pinstripes. Nope.. don't suppose.

...is a racial slur like Red Man?

Honestly, before you rush to claim all patriots and yankees for the white race, could you PLEASE go back to your high school history classes and remember Crispus Attucks. A man of color, perhaps even BOTH African and Native American heritage, who was among those killed during the Boston Massacre. Heck, the only one anyone remembers. Among the Revolutionary era heroes buried at Granary.

And Celtics simply aren't a comparable example. For starters, the Irish actually use Celtic as a sports name IN Ireland. If you want to show me an example of Native Americans calling sports teams the "Red Men" before European settlement, be my guest. Then it might be a comparable example. Even still, Celtic was representing the community the team was founded in AND the word isn't a slur. Red Men is and it doesn't represent the community in Natick. If Harlem started a team called the "Harlem Crackers" you might have a point. Call me when that's done seriously and not to make a point. Then, you'd have a comparable example to the Natick Red Men.

I'm glad Natick is changing the name. I'm agnostic on a lot of the tribal names (though I think the mascots are usually over the line) but "redmen" is clearly over the line.

Although Framingham also claims him.

The Celtics? That's not particularly offensive. If it were the Boston Drunk Irishmen with a passed out leprechaun next to an empty bottle of whiskey as a mascot, that would be offensive.

I don't know where you were trying to go with the Yankees or Patriots. Lots of folks consider themselves yankees and patriots regardless of race, ethnicity,or socioeconomic or geographic location and they aren't racial slurs.

with its Fighting Irish?

My general feeling about all of these Native American-related team names: keep the names, lose the logos. (There's nothing derogatory about being a "Chief" or a "Warrior" or being "Brave".)

If the point is that a team name should reflect its dominant ethnic content, then the Boston basketball team shouldn't be allowed to use the name of any white ethnic group.

For that matter, the Chicago Bears don't have a single ursine on the team the last I checked, and the Miami Dolphins are completely lacking in cetaceans.

Insisting on such a standard reveals an unjustifiable obsession with race.

The Winchester Sachems uses a native american theme, but it is a respectful one - it reflects the original human inhabitants of the area, specifically their leadership, and the logo/mascot are appropriate to the area.

Much better idea than the Atlanta SlavesBraves or Cleveland Indian mascots, which are cartoonish amalgams of tribal dress from multiple regions and a derisive stereotype savage added in.

The Mohawk Trail totem poles drive me up a tree, too. You never put thunderbird down that low! And where are the minor totems that make the stories work???? Can't be all raven all the time! Next to a tipi? The Mohawk didn't do totems or tipis.

They should get rid of the "red" because it's racially insensitive, and "men" is sexist, so it should be the "Natick Persons".

That should be "Natick Perchildren".
