Free bus rides

Mr. Cooper is new to MBTA buses and so is amazed to learn:

... Apparently, if you try to pay with cash on the bus instead of using one of these pre-paid cards, they just wave you right on! It's free! Why is anyone paying for this?!

That's never happened to me! Whenever I've forgotten my CharlieCard and taken the bus, I've had to pay.

It seems to me that whenever I have forgotten my card and I'm boarding when it's crowded, if it's pouring, or if the bus is running late, the driver will wave people with cash on because those fare boxes were designed primarily for fare cards like Charlie Cards, and it would just take too long. The reader that you have to use if you have a "ticket" card is slow too. They especially weren't designed with people using change in mind. That coin slot is maddening. I've also been waved in if I need to add value to my Charlie Card when boarding the bus and it's late or crowded, etc. Another pet peeve: why can't they install some kiosks to add value besides the T stations?? We don't all take the subway. Some of us don't live anywhere near the subway.

I've noticed this, too. It seems to occur mostly when there are a number of people waiting to board the bus. The driver often will just wave the cash paying rider on, but require the Charlie Card folks to pay. All this going on wile the "T" is billions in the red. Go figure.
