Not quite a full aging hippie

Kelly reflects on a trip to her local Whole Foods Market tonight:
... There I, along with my fellow Volvo- and Prius-driving, ageing, former hippies, stocked up on over-priced tofu, tempeh, organic veggies and whole grains in bulk, while wistfully eyeballing the hemp clothing. We dutifully bagged our groceries in the cloth bags we brought with us, and made our way home.
I haven't completely gone over to the dark side, however. My cupboards still contain such miracles of modern chemistry as Double Stuff Oreos, Lucky Charms, gin, and Spaghetti-os, and probably always will. ...

Whole Foods
Lots of Obama bumper stickers on those Volvos.
White guilt is alive and well.
Out West
in Amherst we call em Volvo Vigilantes!
Of course
Because that's the only reason somebody could support Obama.
Idiot.
White guilt for Obama?
I love intellectual gems like this one. Does that mean when a person of color votes for a white candidate that they have "black guilt" "Latino guilt" "Asian guilt" or in their case are they simply voting for the candidate they like the best? Could it be that some white people actually think Obama is the best candidate or is that beyond your comprehension. Do men who vote for Hillary suffer from "Male Guilt"? Does a Black who votes for McCain suffer from "Black guilt"? And so on and so on...
why so self-deprecating?
So what if you an ageing former hippy? I say get over it. Not everyone who shops at WF is a Prius driving hippy. Furthermore, the tofu isn't overpriced.
Here's something fun to try
Here's something fun to try - go to Whole Foods and jot down the prices for a few "regular" grocery items (say, Tropicana orange juice, Poland Spring seltzer water, Bird's Eye frozen peas, Gulden's mustard, Quaker oatmeal, Annie's mac and cheese, etc.). Then go to Shaw's and price the same items.
You will find that Whole Foods is almost always cheaper, and in some cases a LOT cheaper - the Irish oatmeal I like is something like $2.79 at WF and $4.29 at Shaw's for the exact same box.
Is Whole Foods' cheapest chicken and ground beef more than Shaw's cheapest chicken and ground beef? You betcha - but they're completely different products, and people can choose whichever one they prefer.
Criticize Whole Foods all you want, but if you do so on the basis of prices, you come across as not knowing the facts.
Beef
Grass fed beef without rbst. yummmmm. I find beef from other stores tastes something like slightly beef flavored cardboard in comparison. But yes it costs more.
My Favorite WF product
Before Thanksgiving, they were selling "turkey brining kits"
at WF. This consisted of a mason jar filled with
3 parts salt to 1 part sugar. I think the price was
about $5. And yes, people were buying them in wide-eyed
wonder.
Many people will buy
Many people will buy anything that diminishes the need to think in their day-to-day lives. Simple, simple things have been recast in the public mindset (thanks to marketing) as being huge "hassles" that need to be avoided. Hence, the appearance of "solutions" to these "problems".
Whole Foods is a Solution Provider?
Call me old-fashioned, but I'd rather buy a box of Diamond Kosher. I've always been good at problem dissolving.
Not just whole foods
Last week at some supermarket (can't remember if it was Shaw's or Roche Bros.), I saw two items for sale right next to each other: One was the turkey brining solution kit, which, yeah, was basically salt (and 11 secret herbs and spices, maybe? I don't remember); the other, sold separately, was the bag you'd put the turkey in.
Water sold separately?
What kind of a solution is that?
I'm trying to imagine just what kind of bag would hold up a turkey and a couple gallons of brine. Sounds like a mess waiting to happen. Me, I still haven't kicked the bucket. The handle was included!
Gin is a modern miracle?
I wouldn't really consider gin to be a miracle of modern chemistry. It's a time honored spirit with a long rich history. Admittedly, the better gins have benefited from technology, but if you are longing for the good old days just get some of the cheap stuff.
Spell check 1, 2!
Aging is spelled aging, not "ageing." Ageing reads like a verb instead of an adjective. Either way its not a recognized spelling of the word… at least, not yet.
But I Reuse!
Since they closed the StopNShop in my neighborhood, Whole Foods is our only grocery store. I reuse their plastic bags as garbage can liners in my indoor garbage cans back home. They are sturdy... and beige, so they match my decor.
Where will I get my free garbage bags when WFs stops giving them? I'll have to buy "real" garbage bags, Hefty or something.
And what about the store, dont they want all the free advertising that comes when the customers walk out with their bags? That, as opposed to the homemade canvas hippie bags most customers will have after March 1st?
Oh well.
Paper bags
They'll still have paper bags, and presumably those will still advertise the store's name.
