Dunk's: It's what's for dinner

Maybe if I still had the sort of job where I'd be at work until 2 a.m. (reporting on exciting selectmen's or public-works board meetings), I'd be thrilled to death by the announcement that Dunkin' Donuts is moving into the dinner market - it'd be a welcome change from the chicken fingers I'd get at the Sampan in downtown Framingham. But now that I'm old and get home in time to watch Charlie Gibson most nights, all I can think is "No, this must be stopped."

Meanwhile, Dunk's is giving away free samples of its new "food" at City Hall Plaza today. Good day for it.

The food is terrible, its arrival on the menu has led to a three-fold increase in the waiting time for a single cup of coffee, and something tells me that Dunkin' employees aren't making any more money for their troubles. I can't think of anything worse for the morning coffee line than additional choices for a Masshole to ponder at the register (rather than, you know, while he or she was waiting in line), except maybe a wide selection of lottery tickets and single cigarettes.

Agreed on every point

But the investors demand growth, growth, growth!

I'm just glad Starbucks abandoned their sandwiches. Dragged down the pace of entire operation, took up counterspace that appears to be at a premium in every store, and made each and every location stink with the horrible stench of burned cheese.*

* Full disclosure, while I love pizza, I find most cheeses to be vile smelling and tasting things that should be kept as far away from me as possible.

WHAT is that smell!??!?!

Starbucks Sandwiches

They still have them. I had one last Saturday. The eggs florentine is pretty good hang-over food aka it's covered in cheese.

They're burning through the last of their stock. They'll be gone for good very soon.

Aw damn...I LIKED the Starbucks breakfast sandwiches. They're much foodier than egg-and-cheeses elsewhere.

... but Dunkies doing dinner? Yuck. Everything from Dunkin' Donuts tastes like a donut.

Dunkin Donuts Tastes Like Donuts???

By MattL (not verified) | Wed, 02/13/2008 - 1:27pm

Kiss your mother with that mouth?

Not that there's anything wrong with tasting like a donut...

By Suldog | Wed, 02/13/2008 - 2:18pm

... if you're a donut.

It's just that the first time I had a bagel there, it had an unmistakable taste of donut grease that lingered on the palate. Same for the croissants.

DD flavoring

By MattL (not verified) | Wed, 02/13/2008 - 2:37pm

I've always felt like their coffee taste like donuts, their donuts taste like coffee, and everything kind of tastes like cigarettes.

That Seals It

By Bostonian (not verified) | Wed, 02/13/2008 - 11:32am

I won't be going to DD's ever again. They should just put up the golden arches and get it over with. Filthy. However, I predict that this is going to be a catastrophe for DDs and they will be back to their old ways in short order. Moving this far away from the basics is a bad idea, and their current level of expansion is going to make it worse.

Been there...no thanks!

One of the test Dunkins for this bright idea is down the street from my office in Nashua, NH. I tried something last summer - all I remember is it had alot of cheese and was overpriced and I coulda gotten the l unch deal across the street at Papa Gino's for the same price!

Stick to what they're good at

They need to stop adding more crap to their menu. The smoothies are terrible. The new food is awful. Stick to coffee, donuts, and breakfast items. That's what they're good at, and that's what people want.

I think it's interesting

By Suldog | Wed, 02/13/2008 - 12:57pm

I think it's interesting that they're making, if not the exact mistake, at least somewhat the same mistake that Krispy Kreme made, and which allowed Dunkies to kick their ass out of the state. They're expanding way over their heads.

Sticky muffins

By fitzgerald (not verified) | Wed, 02/13/2008 - 1:08pm

Their muffins are the worst very doughy and sticky. I think they should stick (no pun)to coffee and donuts only.

Their bagels are not bad

By adamg | Wed, 02/13/2008 - 1:13pm

Had an egg-and-cheese on a sesame bagel for breakfast, in fact (probably shouldn't have crumpled up the wrapper while the boss was talking during our weekly manager's meeting, though).

Ugh

By Neal | Wed, 02/13/2008 - 2:07pm

I think I just threw up in my mouth a little bit.
I find almost everything they make to be disgusting. They can't even get their 'coffee' right, its chemical smell is enough to put me into colonic distress. Their 'eggs' are reconstituted from powder and most of their baked goods taste like they're made with way too much baking soda or preservatives and have a sticky sweet aftertaste of indeterminate origin. I can't for the love of god figure out why DD's is so popular.

I will say though, their white hot chocolate is pretty good (and their cookies used to be, but it's been a while since I've had them).

This is just wrong on so

This is just wrong on so many levels.
