Nightclub turns into fight club

Aria, 246 Tremont St., might have some explaining to do to city licensing officials after an all-out brawl shortly before the scheduled end of "Girls Gone Wild" night early this morning:

... The fight grew to about 20-35 people, as patrons started to swing champagne bottles striking people about the head and torso. Officers, at this time, were engaged with the crowd and trying to break up the various fights that had broken out.

While actively engaged with the crowd, officers heard one loud bang consistent with the sound of gunshots, followed by two to three more. An officers that was on a platform looked in the direction of the gunshots and observed the suspect standing about five feet away with his hands extended holding a black firearm randomly firing shots into the crowd. ...The suspect refused to heed officers' commands to drop the weapon as they attempted to remove the gun from his possession, and kept trying to reach for his waist.

After disarming the suspect, officers were now faced with an attack from the crowd who attempted to attack officers. Officers requested assistance from other units and alerted the dispatchers that officers were in trouble. Numerous units from around the city responded to the scene and after some time were able to secure the scene.

Initial tally: Damion Jamaal-Anthony Haley, 24, of Milton, charged with the shooting. Four injured people, including a state trooper, taken to the hospital. Haley already had six outstanding warrants, police say.

Channel 5 reports police shut down the streets around the club and brought in dogs to control the rampaging mob.

The Herald reports a Boston police officer got into a crash while racing to the scene. Channel 4 reports it was a K9 unit at the intersection of East Berkeley and Tremont.

My dog is less animalistic than these scumbags.

"security officials" for the nightclub?

If you're private, you're not "official". I wish the media would get this straight...

Comment from a club goer

By adamg | Sun, 02/24/2008 - 2:57pm

ChezNiki is pissed off, starting with the question of how the guy got into the club with a gun:

... There are only about three, maybe four, clubs left in Boston proper that will allow Black/ Latino clientele with HipHop music. Regardless of the violence that happens on a regular basis at the white, and Asian clubs that play rock and techno music, venues are looking for an excuse to exclude Blacks, Latinos and our music. Now this shooter fool has given them all an out, even though this was clearly a failure on the part of the security staff and the club itself. After this incident, if I want to dance and hear good music outside of my own house, I will probably have to go deep into the hood or leave Boston all together just to dance! F*ckin Idiot!

If you want a phat time maybe you and your gurls need to try heading out to a gay club, that's where you gonna hear the best dance music.

Boston Citysearch might want to update its Aria review

By adamg | Sun, 02/24/2008 - 10:32pm

Currently in Citysearch's review of Aria:

The Scene
After security thoroughly searches your bag and body, long-awaited entry is finally permitted. ...

The Extras
Don't carry anything too personal in your bag. Security searches its contents in plain view of everyone at the door.

Damn suburbanites, making a mess in the city

By Ron Newman | Mon, 02/25/2008 - 10:45am

I note that the suspect here is from the quite affluent and leafy suburb of Milton.

Some doubt about that

By adamg | Mon, 02/25/2008 - 10:55am

Just like he has two different names, there might be some question as to whether he actual resides in said leafy suburb.

I'm disappointed. Aria was my preferred spot. I decided at the last moment not to go on Saturday. It has become too popular for its own good. If there were clubs around everyone wouldn't be trying to squeeze into one place! That is one problem that exists. In fanueil hall there is at least one brawl every club night. That is ok though I guess. I have seen fights take place right in front of police cars after Aria lets out and they do nothing. The bouncers cannot control the large crowd outside. It is probably the only hang out spot in the city at that time of night sorry to say. This is why the police flock to the intersection at 1:40 am. It's too bad they want someone to get injured before they do anything besides block traffic. The police are not to blame though. The bouncer who knew the weapon carrier is at fault. I couldn't even bring my visine into the club, so you know someone got a pass in this situation.
