Fat lady cues up for Aria

Powell
Alleged shooter.
Held on $1 million bail;
Cops say he told them
he had beef.

WBZ reports city officials have started the process for shutting down Aria following Sunday's Girls Gone Wild shooting/smashing/rampaging.

WBZ also informs us that:

The "Girls Gone Wild" video series features young women in sexually provocative situations.

Just in case you didn't know.

The Globe, meanwhile, reports police were tipped off days before that trouble might happen, that members of the Youth Violence Strike Force were in attendance, that people were patted down at the entrance and yet, somehow, a guy managed to get a gun in:

George Regan, spokesman for Aria, said, "To call this incident bizarre is an understatement. This club spends a lot of time and money on security, and there were seven to nine police officers in there when this happened, so I don't know what else can be done."

George Regan, hmm?

The Herald focuses on the scene inside the nightclub as the rampage erupted:

While trying to escape, she said she fainted from terror recalling the 100 souls who died pushing and clawing their way toward the doors of The Station nightclub in Rhode Island as it burned to the ground in 2003.

Aria is accessed from Tremont Street by a steep, narrow staircase

Hmm, maybe the Fire Department should be joining the investigation?

And the Herald has a different quote from Regan:

... (Aria) takes security very seriously. When you send your kid to school, you don't expect them to be shot there, either.

Police were warned..yet gun got in.

The police were at Aria because the were tipped there might be trouble. How is it that a gun got into the club under these circumstances? I've been to Aria when they wand people to check for weapons. So what happened here? Did Aria fall down on checking people? Did Police warn the club and supervise the security check?

The police are at fault -

The police are at fault - everyone can go home now.

Crowds were hitting each other over the head with bottles. Maybe the police should prevent Champagne bottles from getting in the club too.

You'll notice I aksed a question.

I didn't make a statement. Obviously the crowd there was bad news, but our intrepid police dept doesn't have such a fine record, so it is fair to ask if they handled the lead up to this situation correctly.

Serious bail

By adamg | Mon, 02/25/2008 - 12:37pm

Powell, or whatever his name is, pleaded not guilty to a variety of charges. He was ordered held in lieu of $1 million cash bail by a Boston Municipal Court judge; due back in court on March 24. The Globe reports prosecutors asked for $500,000 bail; the judge doubled bail after hearing stuff like:

"I had a beef," Haley told police, according to [an assistant DA]. "They threw a drink so I had to come out with it."

Meanwhile, Channel 4 reports Aria has voluntarily given up its liquor and entertainment licenses while the city investigates what happened. Police Commissioner Ed Davis says he wants to shut the place down for good.

Back to the Globe, the paper notes:

In the past, police have warned other clubs about trouble, and it was not immediately clear why officers did not communicate with the owners of Aria.

One entrance?

I don't know anything about Aria in particular, but in most clubs and bars there are several ways in and out, especially if you know someone or have a couple of twenties you don't mind passing to a staff member. It would be pretty easy to get a weapon in that way.

Carnivorous diet causes gun violence?

By Ron Newman | Mon, 02/25/2008 - 2:40pm

From the WBZ report:

[Prosecutor Susan] Terrie told the court Haley admitted to police why he started shooting.

"I had a beef, they threw a drink, so I had to come out with it," Terrie said Haley told investigators.

So, Ron, you don't have beef with anybody?

By adamg | Mon, 02/25/2008 - 2:44pm

Guess not :-).

Why he's pissed at police, Aria

By adamg | Mon, 02/25/2008 - 2:56pm

Beantown Bloggery notes the police knew something might be up days before, yet still let the club open Saturday night:

... [A]pparently even though the cops know there may be gang related activity INSIDE a club, they don't do anything to prevent it. They just station people there to wait for bad stuff to happen so that they can react quicker. Isn't it better to be pro-active than reactive? In which case maybe some innocent bystanders don't get shot? ...

But is the bar owner responsible for all conduct by customers?

By Ron Newman | Mon, 02/25/2008 - 3:00pm

If someone came to one of my neighborhood bars and started shooting, I'd be horrified .... but I wouldn't blame the bar owner or demand that the place be permanently closed.

While I am not a lawyer by any stretch, I would imagine that, in a civil court, a case could be made that a bar owner was partially liable if they didn't provide adequate means to protect their customers from such events (especially when it's foreseeable).

I am a busboy at ARIA and just wondering if I will be
able to pick up my paycheck on Friday. Gracias

I fail to see why we'd know

I fail to see why we'd know anything about what Aria's management plans to do about your paycheck? And seriously, who doesn't have direct deposit these days?

I think he was being sarcastic. Duhh. I have a question though. Actually I have one question and one comment. Though this nightclub clearly has a sketchy reputation, it is widely known that many college kids go there every weekend to dance. I am sure these aren't the same kids who were involved in the "gang violence" that the police were tipped off about and were there on site waiting for. I am not so sure these college kids would have gone to Aria that night had they known what the police knew. Next, my question is about the Girls Gone Wild party. I was told by people who were there, that there was no nudey party at all. The GGW crew was taping the dancing and so forth. What is that all about? The newspapers made it sound like it was a virtual orgy.
