Starbucks seeks nirvana in a glass

That shutdown yesterday? Starbucks used the time to introduce its workers to its new guarantee (customers who find their coffee less than perfect can return it and a barista "will make it right") and to announce it's going back to its old policy of pouring espresso into shot glasses before pouring that into the paper cups customers get.

Could somebody notify Associated Press that that's all we really needed to know, rather than the the Epic of Gilgamesh it brewed up?

Christina Mallozzy, a pharmaceutical saleswoman, looked miffed when she walked up to a Starbucks on Manhattan's Upper East Side only to find out it was closed. "I'm not furious. My life's not going to end," said Mallozzy, 25. She was, however, annoyed because she had gone to the trouble of snagging a parking space.

they needed to shut down for 3 hours to tell the baristas that they will pour espresso twice and that they should remake drinks that customers dont like?

couldn't this have just been put in a memo? and what was their old policy when they made bad drinks? tell the customer to suck it up?

Think about all the free publicity that Starbucks got bu announcing that they would close all their stores for a few hours to retrain their staff. Virtually every news organization in the country covered it. Absolutely priceless....

...Starbucks closing for 3 hours or who Paris Hilton is dating?

Most mainstream news organizations stopped reporting actual news years ago - you get about 5 minutes of legitimate news updates and then it's on to: thieves steal 'ATM machine'; elderly man drives into side of building; tragic scarcity of Hannah Montana concert tickets; American Idol recap.

I'd consider "elderly man drives into side of building" newsworthy, as it raises the public policy issue of whether elderly drivers should be subject to periodic road re-tests.

Right, however, it just seems as if the news media often uses 'elderly man drives into side of building' video footage as convenient filler...

Well, trying to get hourly-paid part-time workers to get all excited about pouring flavored water will be hard. (I remember someone criticized me for saying they were well-paid, but let's not get into that ...).

I think it was a good move. The CEO seems sincere in his efforts to make the trip to a coffee shop more of an "experience" than anything else.

Dunkin' Donuts wins the award for the day, however. In case you missed it, they were offering $.99 lattes, from 1-10PM, yesterday (and, I hear, free lattes, in some markets) in order to bring in some extra business and as a way to tease Starbucks.

Now, that's clever!

I can't comment on how well they get paid per hour; the company does offer benefits to part time employees who work at least 20 hours a week.

Maybe it was a training module to deal with horrific ramifications of yuppies changing their babies on the tables.

How are the "baristas" going to unburn their beans?

That sends me into a sociological tailspin. What kind of person is it who only ever meets people at Starbucks?

I remember when Starbucks seemed urbane to me. I remember being on business travel in the great wastelands of the flyover states and going to a Starbucks at a mall to pretend I was in a city.

Now it seems more to me like Starbucks is a little bit of the wasteland mall brought to the city. It's like the larval form of the Cheesecake Factory.

Carpool Buddy requested a Starbucks stop on the way to work. The guy at the register was more chipper than usual... he seemed like he'd been taste testing too many espressos.

However, my small coffee was just as average as usual.

In the current commercial, it's a "large." But it was just a "medium" in the old TMBG version:
