Jesus, it's about time the state let us join the Communist Party

State Rep. Byron Rushing has introduced a bill to repeal a variety of archaic laws, including those against blasphemy and the Communist Party.

Rushing says it's an attempt to clear out legal deadwood, although it does not include a 1913 law banning miscegenation, which the Romney administration found and used to block out-of-state gay couples from marrying here.

In the past, Rushing has also tried to change the state seal as insulting to native Americans, in part because the sword-wielding arm at the top looks like it's poised to decapitate the Indian below it.

The actual bill (which, naturally, news accounts don't link to because God forbid you might want to read the stuff they're actually writing about, although in this case they might be right because you then have to look up all the laws it refers to).

Unless my browser is acting screwy, your link to the bill doesn't work.

It was my fault, sorry.

How do they know what kind of paper I print my PDFs on?

Works fine for me

Perhaps your browser has an issue with PDF's?

Some friends of mine once tried to get prosecuted for blasphemy so they could mount a court challenge, but the cops wiggled out of pressing charges.

No, it really was my fault

I forgot to put "http://" in the URL tag. Doh! You can see the file now because I put that in.

Original seal

He thinks the current seal is insulting? He should look at the original seal for the Massachusetts Bay colony. It was of an Indian, except the person who drew it was still in England and had never seen an Indian before. Lacking first hand knowledge, he drew a naked Englishman with a bush covering his crotch, and a scroll coming out of his mouth that read "Please come over and help us." You can still see it on the exterior wall of the Old State House, or in a couple places inside the current State House.

More precisely:

which looks very well-tanned for an Englishman.

Wow, I thought you were kidding about the words on the scroll! That's quite...special.

Obviously altered

Here's the original seal with the real text.

Archaic laws

If you don't have a copy of the general laws handy, email me and I'll send you a description of each of the sections to be repealed.

Also we're dealing with the repeal of "1913 law" separately. That bill is H. 1728.
