Officials are tightening security at a Boston high school after a gang of adults walked into the cafeteria and helped a student attack a classmate, police said.

I was pretty happy to leave high school behind me. I have a hard time imagining making a special trip back to get in a fight in the cafeteria at the age of 39.
Seems to me like someone's in need of some schoolin'.
If I asked anyone in my family to come to school to help me kick someone's ass, I would be beaten. Not to mention the fact that everyone at school would pick on me until I offed myself.
From the article, it sounds like parents and staff were already unsatisfied with the security situation at the school.
Who knows the whole story? Maybe this kid had gotten jumped several times already, and the school hadn't done anything despite the parents' repeated complaints.
Wouldn't you be frustrated with a school that couldn't protect your child from getting attacked?
Wouldn't it be tempting to flip out like this and attack the people who hurt your kid when it seems like no one else is doing anything to stop them?
It wouldn't be the right thing to do, but tempting all the same.
I can understand that there are a lot of school administrators with a "boys will be boys" attitude about what the adult world would call assault.
Personally? If my kid were jumped multiple times and nobody did anything about it, I'd go after the administrators, not the inmates. Get restraining orders and force them to enforce them. Get my kid to call the police in. Make their lives difficult in numerous ways until they did their job.
Well, maybe this is a new type of helicopter parent. Instead of pestering CEOs of hopsitals like Paul Levy with "hire my brilliant son" letters and phonecalls, they go to school to help kick ass.
Junior can't do it alone, obviously. We have to help!
And junior is all "maaaaaa! I can do it! When will you cut the apron strings and let me fight my own battles. Literally!"
That is some screwed up shit. Imagine adults surrounding a kid so that the kid they know could belt him. The female "grown-up" kicked the kid. Even if the kid is the bully, adults OUGHT TO KNOW BETTER.
I hope they haul their asses into court and slap them with criminal tresspassing and assault. Parents should know to tkae their complaints to school officials.

We are a new Boston Public High School established in 2005, focusing on important issues in Science that relate to Humanities, Mathematics, Foreign Language, and of course Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Our essential question: "What is our place in the world?" challenges the students to take part in the research necessary to find not only his or her interests and strengths, but also how these attributes serve the world beyond the school, beyond the city, even beyond the region.
There's no more West Roxbury High School. It might be interesting, once more facts come out, to compare what happened in this case with what happened last fall at another one of the schools.

Are you sure that it was the "large monolithic" that wasn't working? Does putting incompetent teachers into smaller subdivided "schools" make them better teachers? Or does putting kids who are functional illiterates into smaller subdivided "schools" instead of "large monolithic" schools make them better prepared to do high school work when they arrive? There are many factors that could be contributing to poor performance - school size is just the latest solution, and will be followed by another when "small, monolithic" becomes the problem.

I get the impression that the whole high school experience may be new to this entire extended family.
