Housebreak epidemic in South Boston

120 burglaries between September and March, compared to 71 in the same period last year.

Boston Police say that in nearly half the cases, there was no sign of forced entry; so they are reminding residents to lock their doors. Jewelry and electronics are popular targets - including flat-screen TVs.

The reason there's no sign of forced entry is because the locks are probably getting bumped.

It's simple: use a key blank cut a certain way, stick in the lock, put some tension on the key, and then rap it a couple of times with something like a screwdriver handle. Pop, you're in. And it leaves zero sign of entry, unlike picking methods, which typically scratch the cylinder.

Extra fun bonus: insurance companies don't pay out claims on homeowner insurance when there's no sign of "forced entry", because they claim it means you left the house unlocked, and thus it's Not Their Problem.

You're not helped by expensive locks- in fact, the expensive locks are sometimes more susceptible, because better tolerances and machining make the pins easier to bounce.

The true solutions:

Be aware of what is happening in your neighborhood and get to know your neighbors so you can see when something is going down that shouldn't be. Install an alarm system. Get a can of Pickbuster, which is a goop that makes it much more difficult to bounce the pins in the lock.

...I live in the middle of f***ing nowhere now. And, I still lock all my doors at night, and when I leave the house. You never know.

And if anyone does break in, my 10-month old cockapoo, Finn, will drive them nuts by repeatedly, and annoyingly, trying to get them to play "Toss the floppy duck toy" with him.
