Go Quakers! Hurrah for the Red and Blue!

Ok, WTF???

By Dave daniels (not verified) | Sat, 03/08/2008 - 8:21pm

I was born and grew up in Natick. What's wrong with the Natick Redmen? Is nothing sacred, or is everything turning into some jackass throwback to Victorian times? And is it the red and blue, because adding white, as in red white and blue, be too racist??? Come on, gimme a friggin' break.

The Natick Collections

How's that? If it is good enough for a premier upscale shopping experience, it is good enough for a high school!

How's this:

The Natick Shoppers! When I was in elementary school in Burlington, a local busybody (who had a reputation for trying to create controversy out of nothing) wanted to change the mascot from the Red Devils because she thought it was satanic. She also said that her children were frightened by the 12 foot high abstract red devil caricature just inside the main entrance of the school. One school committee member somewhat sarcastically asked if "the Burlington Shoppers" would please her (on account a shopping mall located in town). Needless to say, it was never changed.

Did anyone ask?

When Florida State University, you know the Seminole Indians who do the tomahawk chop, was reconsidering their mascot, they decided to ask the actual Seminole Indians whether they found the mascot offensive. The Seminoles said they took no offense. FSU kept their mascot.

Has anyone in Natick asked?

Why they asked at FSU

By Kaz | Sun, 03/09/2008 - 2:13am

The reason they asked at FSU is because it was a loaded question that they already knew the answer to.

FSU pays off...ahem, donates to the Seminoles which might give them a more favorable reason to let them keep using their tribe as a sport mascot.

Redmen is a slur. Seminole

Redmen is a slur. Seminole is the name of a tribe. What I suspect is offensive at FSU is all the ridiculous pomp around the team. What's offensive in Natick is the name. They should just change the name, but Red & Blue is just stupid.

Yeah there is a definite

Yeah there is a definite difference between Redmen or Redskins (offensive) and Seminoles (name of the tribe, not offensive).

So how about Chiefs, Braves, Warriors ?

These all strike me as positive characteristics for an athlete to have, and yet supposedly all of them are offensive to some Native American groups.

has anyone asked?
