The Milky Way Lounge and Lanes Sprinkler System Fund Raiser!

UH readers,

The Milky Way Lounge (www.MilkyWayJp.com) is a staple in my neighborhood and has been a generous supported of my organizing efforts (www.neighborsforneighbors.org). Every year they've reinvested 1% of their revenue back into the community. Now, we've got a chance to show them our appreciation.

Please join me:

Friday Night March 21st 2008, 9:00 PM Doors, 10:00 PM Show
$15.00 ADV / $18 DOS / 21+

The Milky Way Lounge & Lanes in Jamaica Plain has been a community gathering place for nine years, bringing together Bostonians of every kind to enjoy delicious affordable food, high quality cocktails, cutting edge live entertainment, dance music, and of course, candlepin bowling. The mission of this unique venue is not only to be a one-stop destination for casual fun, but also to strengthen the Jamaica Plain community as a whole by providing stable jobs for over fifty employees, drawing people to Hyde Square, magnifying resources for community groups by hosting fundraisers and events, and donating 1% of sales to local non-profit organizations. Co-owners Pierre Apollon, Katherine Mainzer, Charlie Rose and Carol Downs have successfully re-invested the resources generated by The Milky Way back into the community they love.

The Milky Way now invites its many fans and loyal customers to help The Milky Way raise funds to pay for the installation of sprinklers by attending our Sprinkler Fundraiser!Although the Milky Way is a tenant and does not own its space, it had to install sprinklers in order to remain open as a restaurant with entertainment, a $70,000 project that is near completion.

Proceeds from this show will help offset this cost and keep The Milky Way thriving in 2008.

About the Entertainment

PRESSURE COOKER is Bostons progressive roots reggae band. The group was founded in 1997 with a shared love of Jamaican music of the sixties and seventies era. Using this inspiration as a guide, Pressure Cooker crafted its own flavor of new American reggae music, thoughtfully written and powerfully delivered through a horn-infused, nine piece supergroup. Pressure Cooker has performed live for nearly a decade, and independently recorded five full length releases.Pressure Cooker has played in support of top artists of reggae music including Burning Spear, Toots & the Maytals, Prince Buster, Derrick Morgan, The Wailers, The Skatalites, Culture, Eek-A-Mouse, Julian Marley & Sister Carol.

Iyeoka Okoawo is one of the top slammers in the country. She's composed and performed work for President Paul Kagame of Rwanda, as well as recieving New England Urban Music Award for the Best Female Spoken Word Poet of 2006. Iyeoka will help you to remember that there is no such thing as "slam poetry", only three minute time slots where a poet tries to inject their heart into yours.

Blending hip-hop, soul, jazz and funk with an eclectic and poignant tongue twisting lyrical style, the seven members of The Press Project circulate massive amounts of physical and musical energy in a supercharged live performance spectacle. The band performs over twenty originals and select covers by The Roots, Guru, Common, Talib Kweli and others.
