Finally, a soda even more horrid than Moxie

James Barrett Sorensen reports on his experience with A&W Root Beer Float Soda:

... This is one of those, "How can they legally bottle this? My tongue needs a scraping. Why aren't the chemicals dissolving the bottle? My stomach hurts. You might need to call an ambulance" type beverages. Run screaming. ...

Are you kidding?!!??

Moxie might be an acquired taste, but those that love it, LOVE it - like me... I used to think it was gross, but became a convert. It's only worth drinking from a can though. It tastes like garbage when it's been stored in plastic bottles.

Moxie devotee

I agree with Anonymous! I love the stuff!

Moxie challenge

I grew up in Maine went to college in Connecticut. My orange Moxie t-shirt prompted so many questions that I used to bring a half-dozen 2 liters back to school after any trip home. Sometimes, after a long night of beer or whiskey (or both) drinking, people would see a warm bottle of Moxie on the counter and it would prompt a challenge. We'd all take a pint of Moxie and see who would be last to finish it. The grimaces around the table were hysterical, but so were the "you finish your gawdamned Moxie!" taunts.

Moxie isn't soda

Moxie is Tonic!

When I first tasted it, I finally understood why the local Market Basket had the pop in an aisle called "tonic".

My MIL was appalled that my younger son loves the stuff. I like it too. It reminds me of things my granddaddy used to brew up.

tonic is soda

At least it used to be. It's a bit of local slang that has faded in recent years. My father, and others used to refer to soda as tonic. "Pop" is never used around here.

You bet

I still remember the days when the Roche Bros. in West Roxbury had signs pointing you to the tonic and diet tonic.

Oh, I know that! :-)

But I did find it rather quaintly medicinal sounding - as if one couldn't enjoy a soft drink for it's own sake unless there was some health benefit involved as an excuse to drink it.

It all made some sense when I met Moxie.

BTW, younger son saw this on the computer this morning and asked why we haven't bought any for a while!

Moxie is a fine beverage

I love it too. One added benefit -- no one ever asks for a (second) sip.

Moxie then/now

As a Moxie commonsewer from way back, I contend that the Moxie being bottled now is slightly different from the Moxie of my youth. The stuff now has corn syrup, I believe, whereas that wasn't in the earlier stuff. However, I suppose you would have had to have drank the earlier version to care, so only dinosaurs like me could possibly give a damn.

The secret ingredient, in case anyone is wondering, is gentian root. It's pretty much the same stuff used in bitters.

Does it cure Gonic?

We always joke when we pass signs for that town in New Hampshire. "Martha, fetch the Moxie - Zeke's gonic is actin' up agin!"

No

But it cleared my sebago right up.
