Oh, right, it's a three-day week for Boston public-school kids

St. Patrick's Day Evacuation Day today and then Good Friday at the end of the week. Yes, of course, Boston public schools are closed on Good Friday.

On the one hand, it makes it easier to deal with the kids having the day off from school. OTOH, there's something distinctly prejudicial about the public trading markets and the public schools being closed on a day that isn't even a holiday for some Christians (Orthodox Good Friday is usually a different week).

Yom Kippur

By Brian | Tue, 03/18/2008 - 8:46am

Go into some communities (Randolph, Sharon, Westwood, etc) and they will offer the high holidays as days off. The vast majority of the kids in those schools aren't Jewish, but there is a significant enough minority so that giving everyone the day off makes sense. You could have a policy of not closing school on religious holidays, so as not to be prejudicial to kids with different faith traditions, but how many kids - not to mention teachers - will be in your building on Christmas Day? On the same note, if you are missing 1/3 of your class on Yom Kippur, you will just be going over all the material again anyway the next day. Why bother?

Oh to be young again...

Ah, I miss three day weeks. How I squandered them in days of yore.
