Background info
Letting Red have his way.
How 'bout Washington St.?
Or Bowdoin? That would 1)honor Red and 2)improve emergency services.
Or LaGrange
Because a world-class city can never have too many LaGrange streets.
11 people don't know who Red
11 people don't know who Red Auerbach is?
That's pretty disturbing.
Nashua Street, instead.
Nashua Street, instead.
Or Haverhill or Beverly streets
I agree, rename a side street, not Causeway. The name of Causeway Street reminds us of Boston's old geography, when the street was a mill dam connecting the North and West Ends. It would also be a pain for all the businesses now on that street.
There are no buildings yet with a Haverhill or Beverly Street address, so renaming either one now would be painless. These two streets have being newly re-created as a result of demolishing the Green Line and Central Artery.
I'm as big a Red fan as
I'm as big a Red fan as anybody who ever lived, but I say no. One of the smaller side streets, maybe, but not Causeway.

Problem is that there ain't
Problem is that there ain't nothin on Causeway Street that I would associate with Red.
Enough with the renaming streets
a) it's confusing
b) it takes at least a generation for people to call it by its new name, if they ever do (does anybody call Lenox Ave in Harlem Malcolm X Boulevard? um, no)
c) remembering our history blah blah blah preserving our civic heritage blah blah blah and all that
d) sports obsession in this town needs no further encouragement
Q.E.D., yo.
JFK Street
Your username says you are from Cambridge. Does anyone that you know still call JFK Street by its old name, Boylston Street?
As for sports obsession, there's a precedent. The block of Jersey Street next to Fenway Park was renamed Yawkey Way a decade or two ago.
John Fitzgerald Boylston Kennedy
Touché, Ron :)
However, there is *already* a Boylston Street, and reducing confusion is a good thing. I don't believe there's another Causeway Street, but feel free to correct me.
(Also, I've only lived here for 4 years, not counting school. I'm a n00b.)
Where is
the other Boylston Street in Cambridge? I know of two in Boston (one in the Back Bay and one in Jamaica Plain) but none in Cambridge..
Red Auerbach Road or Auerbach Causeway
Auerbach Way, Red Auerbach Way, no way.
Red Auerbach Road or Auerbach Causeway.
What strawman is this
Kevin Cullen attempts to globingly observe:
Okay, show of hands, please: Who has EVER said they thought the Sox winning two Series in four years constituted a dynasty?
You, put your hand down, you're drunk, you'd put your hand up for anything I said. Show of hands, please: Who wants to get kicked in the goolies?
See?
Sheesh. I want to know which presumptive sumbitch has been talking to Kevin Cullen recently. Unless Kevin is talking about himself.
Yes
Why not name one after him if they have already named a street after a renowned racist named Yawkey? Auerbach was a pioneer in the history of race and sports. He also was one of the winningest coaches in sports history. They should have done this before he passed away.
Umm, there already is a Red Auerbach Way....
Umm, there already is a Red Auerbach Way....
Oh, is _that_ what it's called?
I always called it "Shit I Took a Wrong Turn What Was Wrong With a Rotary In the First Place."
One's not enough
We need one in every neighborhood.
But seriously, wow. I guess neither Tom Menino nor Kevin Cullen thought to research this first.
Maybe... just maybe
It was a clever prank played on Cullen by Menino.
After all, the Glob has spent much ink on second-guessing the cops for going to the wrong Washington street. Perhaps it's payback and Menino was in on it from the start.
um.. maybe?
That's a street?
Until today, I didn't even know it had a name. It's really just a driveway for the parking garage under the Garden.
And a redirect of last resort
If you forget that in these new-fangled streets around here you have to turn left to go left, you can always take that road to get back to what used to be the perfectly sensible rotary.
Where is this former rotary?
Are you referring to Leverett Circle?
It is now only in our memories
But you can see it near the top of this 1952 map. Right by where it says "To Portland and Bangor."
These days they have these new-fangled things called stoplights around there that really confuse me.
Leverett Circle sensible? You're kidding right?
Ask anyone who comes down Storrow heading for I-93 what they thought of that rotary!
$$$
Sure go ahead and rename it, but who's gonna foot the bill when all the state departments that reside on Causeway (there's a lot of them) have to change all that letterhead? Yup, you are.
This is silliness.
other options
For those of us old enough to remember the Pussy Cat Theater...that would be a great street name...
but seriously - There's a Tip O'Neil building right next door, I'd submit he was a much finer and cultural contributor then Red ever was....
Tip O'Neill building should be demolished
That awful building is an insult to a fine politician's memory. Sorry.
Agreed
It belongs somewhere along Route 128.
