So who did win the Massachusetts Drama Guild Finals?

The Globe didn't print the names, because it sponsored the event and printing the names would be a conflict of interest or something. The Herald, which has a blogger who complained about how the Globe didn't cover the event, is far more interested in investigating how much Deval Patrick's trip to New York cost ($472) than covering a bunch of high-school kids who aren't 300 pounds or 6'5" (or both).

But this is the 21st century, so we have bloggers like Thomas Garvey to tell us who won.

Why is it a conflict of interest for them to report - after the fact - who won?

Governor Does Things That Cost Money! Put Your Shocked And Outraged Hats On!

Good god, what a non-story that accounting rundown of a trip to New York is. And considering how much I usually pay when I stay inexpensively in New York, that figure is amazingly low. I'd have expected the angry hats to be put on if he'd put himself up in a Times Square penthouse suite and ate nothing but Kobe Beef during his trip. But no, he spent less than two people would on a trip out "on the cheap". Spare me the histrionics.

Also, if you divide that amount by 6.5 million (roughly the state population), you get something like... $0.000075. I'm pretty sure. I did it on paper. YOUR TAX... UH, TINY AMOUNT OF A DOLLAR AT WORK, PEOPLE.

Of course $500 isn't that much, but just think of the amounts we don't know about. Spending tax payer dollars for private gain is never right no matter what kind of public official you are.

...was that the trip was the tip of the iceburg in terms of time (most people were annoyed at him heading down to NYC, not the cost of doing so.) He reportedly was spending a lot of time negotiating with multiple publishers.

Do you really think that happened outside of his 9-5 job?

I think it's a blessing in disguise, however. No casinos!

well, using that logic, since the Boston Globe owns a portion of the Red Sox (as is explained quite often in stories), then they should not be including game results on the Sports pages

if they DON'T want to cover non-sports extracurricular activities in our High Schools, just say so

When they still ran the Globe Jazz and Blues Festival, the Globe reviewed the concerts (and so did the Herald).

You'd think that part of the Cool Parts of a newspaper-sponsored event would be "...and the winners get their names and pictures in the paper!"

But then again, I guess that Cool Thing isn't quite as novel as it used to be.
