Seems the Emerson baseball team now plays its home games at East Boston's Sartori Stadium, newly rebuilt and featuring lights for night games. In general, the team seems to enjoy the new field, but as the Berkeley Beacon reports, there are some only-in-Eastie issues:
"There were some kids playing soccer in the outfield that interfered with the game a bit," said Anderson. "At one point one of them picked up the ball and threw it at the outfielder on the other team."

I wouldnt categorize that as 'Only-In-Eastie'. Brat kidlets are eveywhere, people just want to categorize e-bos.

This is a problem anywhere there are people who think they "own" the field or have unfettered access or that it is their territory/turf. It happens wherever people have no respect for the idea that it is private space (or controlled public space) and don't accept that those who have properly signed up for it have priority.
I've seen it on soccer fields where I've had to run people off at practice times - even groups of adults that show up and take over. I've seen it in all age groups, actually. It is simply a disconnect between the official uses of space and the unofficial uses of space, and between people who pay for and control that space and the people who have no understanding of the way these things are handled (or don't want to).

Yep
I was thinking "only in Eastie" as opposed to "Only at Harvard Stadium" or some other college-specific ballfield. I'm doubting Harvard outfielders have to worry about getting bonked by soccer balls.
I do, however, remember the day the Brandeis baseball team had enough of the townies making general asses of themselves at the Brandeis field and taking after them with bats (this was at a practice, not during a game), so I suppose it's possible.

It's a city park with all-weather synthetic field turf a football field, a baseball field and a cricket pitch... A CRICKET PITCH? Good thing because cricket has become so popular in Boston.
The city spent $1,000,000 on the park and Emerson's last game was rescheduled because the lights were malfunctioning.

In any case, my brother once got beaned in the back of the head by a cricket ball because there wasn't enough room between the Little League field on which he was an outfielder and a cricket pitch.

I like watching cricket, Australian rules football, competitive fox hunting... all interesting. I just would prefer my real estate tax dollars weren't spent building facilities for those activities. I'm all for public parks too. Can a cricket pitch be used for other purposes when the cricket teams are off working their day jobs?

I've talked to folks who had to run some of them off the playing fields in Mefuh too (sigh). About time that they got some space of their own!
It isn't just Carribeans - Cricket is popular in southern Asia.
I think the real problem is a lack of informal play space for kids, and a total lack of zones for adult leagues. The youth leagues pay for the maintenance of the fields and have the right to run other people off, but there is no space and little time for adult leagues or informal use of the spaces.
Fortunately, I know of a number of decommissioned fields and grassy spaces for scrimages and can redirect accordingly. Sometimes, though, it is a matter of not wanting to pay to use the fields, yet wanting to just use the best fields.

Cricket could be played by SE asianers and people of the Carribean but that doesnt make is a thing-to-do in boston. Having a giant bazillion dollar field for it is insane. Try filling a few potholes instead and let them play on cement!

The bazillion dollar field wasn't built specifically and only for cricket. Screw parks, let's just pour concrete over all green spaces - why spend money on grass, trees and recreation? Let's all be fat lazy pigs and watch TV all day.

Wow to think I almost read that blog, thank god i stopped myself from the mind-altering boredom, i prefer small snipits here. What I did skim was the same sh*t, different area. All that stuff happens in every damn area of the city. The loud music/windy roads are the very backbone of this city. Granted; Easie does contain them but that is only a part of the whole.
