I was just there last week and ordered two cardamon rolls - one apple, one cinnamon - and a delicious apple coffee cake with a tall French roast coffee to go. the interior was well lit and pleasant, there were a bunch of people enjoying the wifi. sorry to hear he news.
I had nothing to do with with but it is flattering to be called "the man". Tell me it was because of your joke about air drying underwear and mine about where else they'd look good.
Self involved. No, it isnt ALL about you. I said The Man, not A Man. The Man is more at-large.
sneaks remain anon, they have something to hide, like being prego!
1)Really short hours. Seemed like they were closed by 7 every day. Huh? JP Licks: Midnight. Emack and Bolios: also Midnight. Both have free wifi too.
2)HORRIBLE wifi that would at best work for a few minutes and was tied to some fucked up "web portal" run by a quasi-entity of the Boston Globe, whose homepage you were forced to view every time you wanted to use it
3)A menuboard printed so small you needed binoculars to read it, and a staff that always had to ask someone else if they actually had something.
4)Not very friendly staff. Ex: I dropped a good 50-75 cents in the tip jar right in front of one of 'em and the girl couldn't be bothered to say "thanks!".
5)Not much in the way of seating. Lot of open floor space.
6)Dirty (mostly the floors- oddly, every time I walked by in the evening someone was mopping the floors with all the tables upturned. I guess they forgot the soap...) The bathroom key was also completely disgusting.
7)Poor selection for a "bakery", and some pretty weird things. For example: I once ordered a sandwich. I asked for mayo on it. I was handed a sandwich without mayo, asked for it, and was pointed towards the forks/knives/etc where I found mayo packets.
8)Dude walking around who couldn't speak much English, who would ask you if you were done with the very obviously not finished plate, then take it anyway when you shook your head and said "no, I'm not done" (I watched this happen to a dude sitting a table away. He was absolutely stunned.)
9)Did I mention the short hours? I was there on a Saturday afternoon with someone, and all of the sudden they turned off the lights and it was made clear we needed to leave.
10)Owners never around, never working the counter or the floor. They seemed to run entirely off college students. Compare and contrast to Sweet Christopher's, where the owner is there every day and extremely friendly and interactive.
Sadly, I see this as the wave of the future in JP, and this isn't gonna be the last place to shut its doors with Real Deal (and City Feed) moving big-time into Centre Street.
Junebug Cafe's staff wouldn't know how to be friendly if they all took prescriptions for it, the food sucks, and (at least during the fall/winter/early spring) the place is so goddamn cold you can't feel your feet.
Back down at Fiores, they also closes ridiculously early. They do have tons of yummy cookies, but unfortunately, they're hidden off to the side.
It's sad when you get off work at 6 and find half the places in JP closed. It's no wonder that people are having trouble paying their bills. Wakeup call: the restaurant business is not a fun one, and you don't get to keep 9-5 hours if you want to make money, because all the people with money are WORKING.
I liked getting my Finnish bun every once in a great while--but how could anyone think that you would be able to keep a huge space like that open with a few buns? I got the feeling they never tried very hard to do anything at all. I can't even see how they made it for two years.

whoa
Do I detect just a grain(1 grain) of anger?
boo-yah
JP is sweet
Sad to hear that a local business is shutting its doors.
I guess this leaves us with only 4 or 5 bakeries to choose from...
Blue Frog
At least this is partially offset by the news that The Blue Frog is expanding.
I've rarely come across a business where the phrase "hurting for space" applied so well. Their food is excellent though.
Very good news! Now if we
Very good news!
Now if we could just get a tad more seating space for Canto 6...
They never tried very hard
