Hey, JP and Rozzie bloggers

Mike Ball and I have been kicking around the idea of having a get-together for folks of the blogging persuasion in our neck of the woods. If you live in JP or Roslindale or thereabouts (it's not like we'd be checking IDs at the door, or something) and would like to meet your blogging neighbors, let me know, either here or via by e-mail, so we can begin to figure out if Doyle's would work or if we'd have to rent the Hynes.

I used to be a regular. Has not been the same since the big guy who looked like Mister Clean on Steroids left to become an actor in Hollywood. I forget his name but he ran a helluva great bar. All were welcome, no trouble, and the Guinness was the best in the city.

Good times.

...and I'd be happy to field other than RSVPs — questions, alternate locations, best days and such. You can send such emails to me here.

Hey, if you're a Townie, you're on the right train line -- half way there.

... then you'd have the opportunity to get a blogger from Watertown to join you. Of course, that's a hell of a reason to NOT consider The Pleasant, too.

But I don't think it's that big or if you can even reserve it.

Adam, I just got out of a meeting with the owners and that room can fit 35 and they will reserve it for us if we want to go that route. No wireless from what I can pick up...but oh the pizza.

Mr. Burke at Doyle's told me that we can have their back room any day and time that it isn't already reserved.

Boston Media Makers was just there for over 30 folk. We also used to have JP Soccer end-of-season pizza parties there, with dozens of parents and kids.

The Honey Fitz room it is, eh?

If not, I have not problem going to the Pleasant (other than the beer is much better and more varied at Doyle's).

Same here, either is fine by me. All this talk about beer and pizza on opening day is going to result in a very unproductive day.

Not to push the issue, since I'll mprobably crap out on you anyway, but I know The Pleasant's back room can be reserved. We had (I kid you not) our rehearsal dinner there. It was 1992, granted.

Just because we blog and are tech savvy(most of us), that doesn't mean we would go out to meet e/o and need wifi. I always think that ias so funny. What,..sit at opposite tables and chat online?
Is that the bar that allows pooches? At least I'd have a buddy if I could go.

Agreed, this will also cut down on useless Twitter updates like "...just finished my fourth slice of pepperoni". I'm not sure they allow dogs, my Jack Russell has a serious Guinness jones.

Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, comes straight out of a can or the freezer, and it came from Sysco before that. "Their" chili? Sysco chili. "Their" burgers? Frozen Sysco patties. Seriously, in JP, which has a dozen plus great places to eat, Doyles is a culinary armpit- and the whole routine of needing to pay cash (or use the ATM in their hallway which bends you over in fees, which of course Doyles gets a portion of.) I also highly doubt it's *just* so they can avoid CC fees...

There's a fairly new mexican place a couple of blocks south of Forest Hills which I've been to and was quite good. Bon Savor is pretty inexpensive but very high quality, if a bit northerly for y'all. Cafe D has a burger that is huge and oh-so-delicious, and most definitely not made from frozen patties.

I agree about doyles' food but beer is necessity. Even if the keg comes out of the freezer

Does anyone have a better beer selection?

The new place in Hyde Park... Townsend's... has 20 beers on tap right now (they JUST opened Friday night) and is adding another 20 to that menu. Just a though. From what I've heard, it's on the pricey side though... so if we want cheap food and beer it's not going to be our place.

I'll have to go check it out. Any bets on whether CF Donovan's will ever actually open?

But Hyde Park? I think there's only two bloggers down there :-).

I'm sure there might be more than 2. I mean I don't say my local but thats another point. I have a car*gasp*
please don't hate me b/c i drive

Your complaints about the food quality may be valid, but why does every store or restaurant need to take credit cards? I think it's sort of cool that some places still don't.

Doyle's takes cards and has for a year or so.

I thought we were coming to meet each other and chat up our blogging and neighborhoods.

Space is key here. Doyle's and maybe Pleasant have enough space AND we don't have to pay for the room or guarantee a minimum.

...at most places, unless you're planning on showing up with 20+ people. And yeah, I have experience here. It's best to call a day or two ahead and speak to someone about the size of your group so they know to expect you...but if they start getting prima donna, you start walking.

What about Dogwood Cafe? Dogwood has damn good standard fare, yummy pizzas made in their fancy-schmancy oven, and a full bar. It's also directly across from Forest Hills, so pretty convenient for just about anyone riding the orange line or bussing it.

... unless you need to park your car.

I like both places, but don't think that either cafe D or Bon Savor can fit that many people too easily

???

Inquiring minds... and all that.

But only if you can correctly identify the location of Roslindale's Japanese restaurant on a map.

No, really, it's to meet bloggers from your neighborhood, not people who blog about your neighborhood.

And isn't it still Korean-Japanese?

;~}

On whether the "pan-Asian" at Bangkok Cafe includes Japanese. But any place that serves sushi is Japanese in my (incredibly thin, poorly researched) book.

up

And it's the best sushi around... AND they deliver!

That you didn't include West Roxbury (by default). I know your said "surrounding areas"... but come on Adam, please don't forget to include us over here! :)

Parkways unite us! Oh, great, now I sound like the marketing department of the Transcript.

We weren't trying to exclude anybody, honest, we were just trying to start small and stay neighborly, Mike lives in JP, I live in Roslindale, and soo. ... Not that there's anything wrong with big blowouts, but, oh, hey, I'm just putting my foot further in my mouth, aren't I?

up

I was just busting your chops. :) I like to think of W. Roxbury and Roslindale as being "one". Since W. Roxbury is so damn homogenous and lacking in any real culture! :)

Don't get me wrong... we've come a long way, but we're still no Rozzie Square... One of these days I'll actually join the W. Rox Main Streets.

When are you thinking of hosting this shin dig? We'll be in Florida next week... but other than then, I'll try to be there!

in fact, it was the last place where Adam and I ran into each other. I'm still using up the Starbucks gift card that I won there as a door prize.

Excellent beer.
Great pizza.
Sure the rest of the food isn't top notch, but they do have a goor variety, for folks of all tastes, but we're not going for the dining experience. We're going to celebrate our neighborhood, and what better place to do it than a friendly neighborhood bar?

I've had large groups at the Dogwood and the waitresses there are more interested in table turnover than keeping a chatting, drinking, group of folks happy. They also don't like it if you get a bit loud.

Besides how many places around JP can easily handle a large group on top of their regular clientel? (Although I confess, I've never been to the Pleasant.)

Roslindale blogger here. But I don't know if I "count" since I recently closed our blog to all but invited readers. It's a blog focusing on the process of adopting our first child, and we were getting loads of rude anonymous comments.

And another vote for Doyle's. I had my wedding reception there!

I agree with Kat
is that good or bad?:)
doyles also has that big back room

I'd love to... as long as the timing works out since I don't get home from work in the 'burbs until around 7pm.
