Milky Way to close next March

An 85% rent increase will do that; Bella Luna, however, will relocate.

Well that sucks.

Its such a great spot, and hardly in some sort of ritzy neighborhood. It was a great thing to have, and I feel bad that I didn't get to go there more than a couple times since moving to, well, near JP.

how nice of Menino

...for him to write a personal letter to the landlord. It might have more to do with Mainzer's democratic party political connections than their "community efforts."

Also nice to see that Mainzer will be getting a nice cheap ride from the Jamaica Plain Neighborhood Development Committee. Nothing like putting your business in a building renovated by a city-supported non-profit where you sit on the board!(going "on leave" during lease negotiations is so sweet of you, darling.) So typical in JP...all the big commercial landlords and business owners in JP have these non-profit tax shelters and back-scratching posts, and they love taking city money for "neighborhood development."

“Now we’re victims of our own success,” Mainzer said. “We’ve made Hyde Square a desirable location. The whole city has really benefited from our efforts.”

Self-aggrandize much? Yeah.you're God's Gift to humanity, Kathie. You single handedly revitalized Hyde Square via beer and so-so food and all of Boston should lay flowers at your door.

Y HALO THAR, LANDLORDS.

(Sorry, Adam. I couldn't resist going for the juvenile interweb insult.)

I couldn't agree with you

By anon (not verified) | Sat, 05/03/2008 - 10:53am

I couldn't agree with you more. Fist the driveway thing, now this. Is JP is the land of self-entitled whiners? It's a free market and the landlord wants to finally extract the real value of his property. Go pound sand. I did like bowling there, though.

“As more of these kinds of

“As more of these kinds of places are being transformed into upscale, baby boomer kinds of places, there are fewer for regular people, 30-something people,” Levin (the landlord) said.
Yeah, places are being "transformed" because of the ridiculous rent increases. A restaurant/club would have to do 3 million+ a year to support 24k a month.
24k a month? For a basement?
The Milky way space will remain empty for years . . . just like all those other empty spaces Levin/Bruce are trying to rent. "Nice job," Mordy.
As for the Brewery complex . . . it was an industrial zone dedicated to small business start-ups and the building trades. Now what? A collection of cute retail stores for the the trust-fund-artists in the neighboring condos?

So where are the industrial

So where are the industrial users? They started leaving before you were born, and they're not coming back. In any case, purple-haired, pierced vegans need space too. Just sayin'.

so sad

That's where I got married, just three years ago. So sad. Such a great space.

...and now this? Wow, I legitimately feel bad for JP residents. Poor bastards.

The landlords

By Rhea (not verified) | Sat, 05/03/2008 - 8:55am

should not hold all the cards. I hope they have an empty storefront for the next decade. They were only 'good' to K. Mainzer at the start because they wanted to start making money in a formerly godforsaken corner of JP. I am tired of seeing landlords determine whether communities live and die. They are accountable to no one.

Seriously? Are you kidding

By anon (not verified) | Sat, 05/03/2008 - 10:58am

Seriously? Are you kidding me? Why shouldn't the landlord hold all the cards? They were the ones smart enough to purchase the property. If they want to raise rent, thats their right and if it fails on them, that's their choice. Take your socialist agenda out of my democracy please.

Let's hear it for Adorno

By anon (not verified) | Sat, 05/03/2008 - 6:13pm

Um, it would be:

"Take your socialist agenda out of my CAPITALISM please."

There is a difference, believe it or not.

That landlord is a notorious

By anon (not verified) | Sat, 05/03/2008 - 11:42pm

That landlord is a notorious scumbag who enjoys hanging on to empty properties for no apparent reason. Viable store fronts all over town are empty b/c this guy is a vindictive asshole, not b/c he wants to get a fair rent. He let a shithole drug den operate at that location for years, got a legit business to clean it up and take the stink of illegal activities away, and now he is going to cash in. This guy doesn't have the best interests of the neighborhood at heart and his properties should be confiscated, or would be if I had anything to do with it. There's some socialism for you.

I think some of the

By Arborway | Sun, 05/04/2008 - 1:31am

I think some of the bitterness stems from the fact the Milky Way just dropped 80 grand on a sprinkler system so they could stay open. Only now that they've made this really expensive, and permanent improvement to the building, the landlord is like "Oh hey guys, give me a ton more money each month, or leave. kthanxbye"

Well then, maybe they should

By anon (not verified) | Sun, 05/04/2008 - 10:33am

Well then, maybe they should have thought that decision through. Why would you make a substansial investment in a property you don't own with and expiring lease? I think I would negotiate an extension to make the investment worthwhile BEFORE installing it. A poor business decision to say the least.

I loved the Milky Way, but I can't let that get in the way of seeing how little these folks know about how business works.
