Jamaica Plain's split personality

Some people woke up the earth today in the same park where a man was recently shot to death in JP.

Mike Ball was there as well. He notes:

At the basketball court just below the Stony Brook T station, the on-court memorial shrine to murdered 20-year-old Luis Troncoso had to be off, apparently not to harsh the festival's mellow. Yet a hand lettered banner running along the back of the court remained.

So I guess the whole thing

So I guess the whole thing should have been called off? Gimme a break. There was a pile of candles and a banner for memorial messages. What would have made everyone happy, exactly? For some punk not to have shot the guy would be the best thing--but that isn't possible now.

So what "memorial" was removed exactly? Are we going to put a plaque up now? Make a place for people to focus their rage, and forever mark a basketball court (a place where kids in the neighborhood play basketball) as a location of violence? Keeping shrines up, sporting pins and hosting "gang" summits only contributes to glorifying a culture that thrives on that kind of recognition. So am I pissy because a bunch of little kids got to have a fun time putting on silly costumes and marching down the street in the rain. No I damned well am not.

I just thought it was

I just thought it was surreal to see little kids playing among the R.I.P. graffiti and memorial candles. That's why I snapped photos.

I was responding to the most

I was responding to the most recent comment about the "mellow", not to your photos, Lyss. It was an interesting contrast as you say.

Well, there are several

Well, there are several sides to this. The city apparently didn't want permanent memorials, even of targeted violence. Also, the family stated that they wanted to move on. So there was a little service before removing the objects except for the banner. It seems unbecoming for any of us to second guess his family when they want the artifacts removed.

RIP My Nig

That's a fine memorial.

LoveLyss takes 57 photos

and all you see to comment on is one sign "RIP My Nig" that you find so frightening but you're blind to the humanity, the tragedy, the concern by people who live in the neighborhood, their children... Are you the same anon that would shoot anyone who entered his house uninvited?
