Walking the Walk
By adamg - Mon, 05/05/2008 - 8:52am.
Chris was among those walking in yesterday's Walk for Hunger:
... Today was a rough walk, it rained for the entire time but I did manage to complete the 20 mile walk in 4 hours and 50 minutes despite the far less than optimal conditions. ...
Anna: I did finish it, but my toes felt like they were going to literally explode.

Hunger walkers
I can appreciate that these people wanted to do good by walking yesterday, but the amount of trash left on Beacon Street sidewalks in North Brookline was appalling (tons of the "I'm a walker" stickers, cups, paper handouts...).
Walking Season is upon us, give up on Memorial Drive
I understand that The Walk for Fill-In-Your-Cause
are well-intentioned, and provide money for charities,
but....
In addition to the trash factor mentioned above, they
also make it impossible to get from Cambridge to
Boston six-eight Sundays a year. Memorial Drive
(the usual route) morphs into the Siegfried Line.
Howsa about spreading the wealth? Like, say, having
the walking route for some of these events wind through
the suburbs rather than downtown Boston and Cambridge?
Or walk through Dorchester
Maybe they'll see some actual hungry people there.
Um, okay
Isn't memorial drive closed on Sundays anyway?
Yes. Yes it is.
Memorial Drive is owned and operated by the State Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR).
DCR closes Memorial Drive in Cambridge between Western Avenue and Mount Auburn Street. The closure is in effect from 11:00am to 7:00pm starting the last Sunday of April until the 2nd Sunday of November.
For more information go to the DCR website www.mass.gov/dcr/driveUpdates.htm.
Memorial Drive on a Walking Sunday
Is indeed closed on Sundays, between Western Ave
and somewhere above Harvard Sq. This actually makes
it worse.
If you need to get across the river, you need
the BU Bridge, or the Mass Ave Bridge. Which are
effectively closed when there's a Walk For ________________ .
Which means, if you're trying to get to Boston from
Cambridge on a Walk For ______________ day, you are screwed.
Rename the walk?
Don't They Mean "Walk Against Hunger"? I, for one, hunger for change.
No, it's Walk For Hunger.
No, it's Walk For Hunger. When they finish the walk, they're very hungry.
I too did the walk for hunger
We started at 8:30 am and completed at 10:30 am. Although it rained in the beginning, the weather cleared up and was better than expected. I did prepare ad wore hiking boots and waterproof clothing so was not wet and miserable.
