Biggest local ice-cream company you've never heard of turns 100

Anybody who drives on Washington Street south of Forest Hills knows the Puritan Ice Cream building - that sad looking brick building with the "Retail Store in Back" sign that never actually looks like it's open.

Rhea Becker reports that not only is it open, but it's 100 years old this year.

But, have any of you ever actually bought any of its three-gallon tubs of ice cream? Maybe that's why they're not better known.

I've never been able to figure out how to buy ice cream from them, because as you noted they never look open.

I live nearby on Weld Hill Street and have always thought the place must be a front because it never looks open.

We've bought one or two of their five-gallons tubs at a time. In our nearby little neighborhood, we unofficially take turns hosting drop-ins. In this house, we do the sundae party.

The sign on the door posts the hours and in my experience those have always been accurate. They don't have a huge range of choices on a given day, but their stuff is really good.

There's always leftovers, even with a single tub, but the two teens at home somehow manage to make due.

There's a Puritan in Manchester, NH, which sells very good ice cream in cups, sundaes, etc. Maybe this is their supply house?

I drove by on Sunday and wondered if that place was still functional
