Teens arrested for murder of a 13-year-old in 2007

Boston Police report arresting the teens for the fatal Jan. 12, 2007 shooting of Luis Gerena near the Jackson Square T stop.

Nurudeen Alabi, now 19, of Roxbury and Darrell Rodrigues, now 17, of Roxbury, were already in custody on other, unrelated charges, police say.

Police say the two shot Gerena on Horan Way shortly after he got off the Orange Line at Jackson Square. Gerena made it to Parker Street before collapsing. He died at Boston Medical Center.

Boy, 13, was minutes from home when slain.

No bail

Ordered held without bail by a Roxbury District Court judge at their arraignment today.

In court when Luis Gerena's family came in

Miss Von Schtoop was in Roxbury District Court today, and wishes the newspapers weren't so clinical sometimes:

... I mean a thirteen year old boy was shot five times, five minutes from home. He was thirteen. He wasn't in a gang. He was a pre-teen living in a tough neighborhood but that does not mean his painful, solitary death should be shrugged off.

A thirteen year old boy, perched between the naivety of childhood and the sudden, surprising hardness of his teenage years, that's all. He was shot to death - hot, hard bullets shredding through the soft and pliant tissues of his liver, his kidney, his heart. A little kid really. Torn up by bullets on a cold winter night.
