Roommate charged with stabbing JP man to death

Shortly before 7 p.m., 5 Gartland St. (on a map). Victim taken to Brigham and Women's with multiple stab wounds. Suspect is 52, victim in his 30s, according to the Suffolk County DA's office, which says an arraignment is likely this afternoon in West Roxbury District Court.

Kim Gaines, 52, pleaded not guilty at his arraignment this afternoon. Ordered held without bail, according to the Suffolk County DA's office, which says it is withholding the name of the victim until his family can be found and notified.

Home is owned by a social-services agency

According to the city assessors' office, 5 Gartland is owned by Vinfen, "a private, nonprofit human services organization and ... a leading mental health provider in Massachusetts."

Been a half way house for some time. Surprised this is the first murder. Gartland Street is correct, some police reports listed it as "Garland".

...at least, I'm 99% sure it isn't. Vinfen operates group residences for people with Dept of Mental Health funding and/or Dept of Mental Retardation funding. Sure, these folks could have substance abuse issues too, but they're generally people for whom this is a step more independent than living with their parents, or people who found fully independent living too stressful. "Halfway house" isn't really accurate. I'm pretty sure they don't run programs with specific house-wide sobriety curricula.
