Isn't the plan to demo the building but then reconstruct the original facade on Essex as part of the new building?

I think they're just going to bulldoze the entire old building and start over. My girlfriend's loft looks out onto the Dainty Dot building. That new monstrosity is going to dwarf her building.

Based on what few press reports I have been able to find it seems you're right. That is a horrible decision, particularly considering that the developer is being given a variance to exceed height restrictions. I wrote an email to the Mayor. Its particularly surprising considering that the State Street Financial Center accross the street was able (likely required) to preserve some of the historic facades of the buildings it built on top of and I think it makes a nice compromise between preserving the old street scape and accomodating modern, high-density, office space in downtown.
