Thieves spiked in Winter Hill

Three Somerville ne'er-do-wells and a friend from Medford caught on the Lowell Line railroad tracks carrying a manhole cover and buckets full of railroad spikes and plates.

morons
The scrap value of cast iron is about $300/ton. These guys will be lucky to get more than $15 for their manhole cover, which probably took the 4 guys about an hour to pry off and carry to the scrap yard. Next time they'd probably be better off shoplifting a stack of Boston Globes or 12-packs of soda and reselling them.
I agree with the previous poster, though, that a railroad spike is much more valuable to the person on the train than a junkie pulling it out for scrap.
Pile of Junk
If you ride the Lowell Line, you will see a very large pile of random junk around the location they describe in the article.
I don't think they did any prying ... just heavy lifting.
