Man in wheelchair hit, dragged by dump truck

Outside the Sullivan Square T stop this morning; expected to survive.

They Towed the Chair

They had a flat bed tow truck pulling it up when my bus went by this morning. Traffic was royally screwed up, and the detail cop next to the truck had to scream at the news reporters standing in the bus lane exit to move their tails so the 93 could make a right out of the station.

That whole area is a massive traffic sewer that looks like toddlers designed it for maximum hotwheels crash action. Then there are the pathetic, nonstandard, and unmaintained "pedestrian facilities": tiny sidewalks, wheelchair ramps that are broken and completely mired in sand, the usual "poles haphazardly stuck in sidewalk" problems that plague most Boston area walkways, and lots of traffic trying to merge, change lanes, etc. Oh, and buses entering/exiting and absolutely NO crosswalks across Broadway from the lumberyard to the rotary (despite the T station parking being across the street where the guy was hit) and no maintenance of pedestrian lights whatsoever.

Long story short: even though the guy was known for traversing the area in a somewhat random fashion, the very poor design and condition of the facilities means that he probably has a nice juicy lawsuit against the commonwealth if he needs to pay for his care. Knowing the area, he was in the street because he couldn't navigate some of the ramps or the frost-heaved and broken concrete of what passes for a sidewalk.
