Breakfast is on him

Korte explains why he'll often quietly pay the tab for somebody else's breakfast at his local breakfast joint:

... For the small price of a breakfast, I can out a smile on someone's face, brighten their day just a bit, and possibly encourage them to do a kindness for a stranger themselves. It's a nice, simple way of passing along good vibes and feeling good myself. ...

He does it so quietly that

He does it so quietly that he posts about it on the internet.

Oh for crissakes

So? It's not like he listed the restaurants he eats at or the times he's there. And if you read the post, you'll see it's really more a remembrance for the guy he learned it from.

Really. Quit the sniping.

Really. Quit the sniping. It's nice.

Tollbooths are fun too

By Kaz | Tue, 05/27/2008 - 1:46pm

Next time you pay at the tollbooth (sorta a lost art in the day of EZ-Pass), give them double the fare and tell them you are paying for the guy behind you.

I went through a tollbooth one time and the worker told me that the guy ahead of me paid for me. I said that was nice but I was still going to pay since I already had my money out. He should pass it on to the next guy behind me. The worker told me I was the 8th person in a row to say the same thing.

Someone somewhere got a free fare for the tollbooth, but more than that one person went away smiling from it.

Me, Too

I've done the pay-for-the-guy-behind-me thing on a couple of occasions. Not only is it a nice little thing to do, the look on the toll collector's face is usually worth the price.

Fast Lane/EZ Pass ruined the fun

By cynical | Wed, 05/28/2008 - 11:53am

I used to regularly pay for the next person at toll booths, but now that I have the Fast Lane thingy I had forgotten all about it until now. Damn that new technology! On several occasions I've also asked the toll-taker to pass on a CD or, back in the day, a cassette, to the person behind me (typically a friend or relative) and suggest they listen to a particular track. That, even more than paying for the next car, always gets a huge reaction because the toll-taker really gets invested in the whole thing. Ah, good times.

Pay it backward?

Another great way to pay it forward

This one's just for the men, though:

When standing shoulder to shoulder at a row of urinals, say "Don't worry, this one's on me" and flush the urinal of the guy next to you. Your generosity will be appreciated but do make sure your business is done and you're all tucked back in and presentable for the public, because you may have to make a run for it afterwards.

that is really bizarre.

that is really bizarre. you're lucky not to get punched for doing that.

haha

Well, *I* thought it was funny... I will have to try that sometime.

What if ...

he wants to thank you by shaking hands?

Who probably mutters under his breath every time he sees a line of auto-flush urinals, knowing they've taken away another chance to do something nice for his fellow man.
