Rachael Ray, terrorist?

Dunkin Donuts succumbs to right-wing wackos and yanks a TV commercial Web ad in which Rachael Ray wears a scarf that supposedly looks like a keffiyeh.

Not fair!

By adamg | Tue, 05/27/2008 - 8:10pm

Why couldn't they yank her for being Rachael Ray?

By Matt (not verified) | Tue, 05/27/2008 - 10:12pm

Ive always hated her, I knew she must have been a male muslim terrorist.

Watch her show up for the 4th of July in a red, white and blue dress with two American flags sticking out of her head.

What the hell?

I think the blog at blog.charlescronn.com says it best, hella funny...

As annoying as I find Rachael Ray...

By Neal | Tue, 05/27/2008 - 8:36pm

I gotta give those these people credit for out dumbing her in this one.
I guess there's something bad under every rock if you look hard enough.

Boggles

By SwirlyGrrl | Tue, 05/27/2008 - 9:08pm

So all those young women I see around BU who are sporting the same fringy crapscarvy neck wrap look must be Palistinian sympathizers, too?

Oy, what will their parents say to the Rabbi?

Makes you wonder what sort of hidden messages are in that "Fritalian" and all the other TMBG/John Goodman ads? Like, the moving one? What about all the communist union sympathizing in the working people one?

What about all the communist

By Neal | Tue, 05/27/2008 - 9:21pm

What about all the communist union sympathizing in the working people one?

Didn't you hear? "Terrorists" (apparently almost anyone from the Middle East, to the right wing) are the new Communists.

I guess some people need a bogeyman to justify their lunacy.

Elliott Smith was right: "Without an enemy your anger gets confused".

Questionable Ethnic Nickname Alert

By SwirlyGrrl | Wed, 05/28/2008 - 9:14am

I've heard Boston University (BU) referred to as "Bee-Jew" more than a few times.

In reality, it has quite a diverse collection of uberwealthy students from oil rich nations that might sympathize with Palestinians - if they weren't more interested in keeping Newbury St. afloat.

(hmmm ... can't spell Newbury street without WBUR?)

BU: Originally Methodist

By anon (not verified) | Wed, 05/28/2008 - 9:22am

BU was originally set up by Bostonians but was originally in New Hampshire. Previous names:

  1. General Methodist Biblical Institute
  2. Concord Biblical Institute
  3. Boston Theological Institute

That said, by the 80's, if not earlier, BU had a reputation for attracting huge numbers of Cadillac-driving New Yorkers. And by extension got a reputation for being a largely Jewish school.

Cadillac-driving New Yorkers?

By adamg | Wed, 05/28/2008 - 9:41am

As a New Yorker who went to a Jewish-themed school in the late '70s and '80s (hint, it's in Waltham and it's not Bentley), I can only say: Please.

The car of choice among well off New York Jewish students back then was the Camaro. They wouldn't be caught dead in a Caddy; that's what Uncle Hy from Cedarhurst drove.

OK, I did know one guy who drove a '76 Mercury Cougar. Jack Abramoff. But he was, of course, the exception that proved the rule.

Remember the IROC?

By bobmetcalf | Wed, 05/28/2008 - 9:45am

Since we're getting all ethnic hear, we
used to say that it stood for "Italian Retard

Cadillac Sunday

By SwirlyGrrl | Wed, 05/28/2008 - 10:16am

All the move in or move out days for the BU dorms in the Back Bay were called "Cadillac Sunday".

As in "I better get my shopping done early this weekend because Cadillac Sunday is coming up".

In the mid-80s there would be Caddy's lining Beacon St. and Bay State Road. Mostly NJ or NY or CT plates. Perhaps they borrowed Uncle Sy's for moving day?

Parents!

By adamg | Wed, 05/28/2008 - 10:25am

Kid drove a Camaro; parents would bring them up/down in the Caddy.

From 4 days ago:

I’m going to give the management the benefit of the doubt. They have braved boycott threats and attacks over their lonely, principled stance against illegal immigration. Given their pro-rule of law, America first position, I highly doubt the executive offices are filled with moonbats who endorse Ray’s keffiyeh chic.

stay classy, malkin

By Spatch | Wed, 05/28/2008 - 11:07am

Michelle Malkin is batshit insane so it goes without saying she's able to call other people moonbats.

She knows her audience

By Gary McGath (not verified) | Wed, 05/28/2008 - 12:42pm

Malkin is quoted as writing: "The keffiyeh, for the clueless, is the traditional scarf of Arab men that has come to symbolize murderous Palestinian jihad." At least she knows that the clueless are whom she's writing for.

terrorist chef

By Lyss | Tue, 05/27/2008 - 10:13pm

J and I were just laughing at that on MSNBC. I do think that the scarf was a bad fashion choice, but for an entirely different reason. (I object to the scarf on the ground that it looks like she's wearing my little cousin's tattered blankey around her neck.)

We have a word for that where I come from

By anon (not verified) | Tue, 05/27/2008 - 11:09pm

So now anythings Arab is terrorist? What about a hijab (which is at least Muslim, while the keffiyeh is just Arab)? How utterly racist, and how craven for Dunkin Donuts to cave to these right-wing lunatics!!!

Other Things That Are Terroristic

By Mollynotloggedin (not verified) | Wed, 05/28/2008 - 10:45am

According to DD's logic, anyway...

Horses

British soldiers

Disney movies

Rimsky-Korsakov

And, of course,

Coffee. I can't wait to see the press release explaining why DD will no longer sell a beverage with such obvious Arabian ties.

You know, I just took a closer look at that scarf. It's paisley. Paisley! Is the terrorist world being infiltrated by paisly, or could she just be wearing a black and white scarf?

The keffiyah looking scarves

By lynn | Wed, 05/28/2008 - 3:42am

The keffiyah looking scarves have been reduced to a fashion accessory.

Isn't that bit of appropriation a good thing?

web ad, not TV commercial

Looks like I jumped to a wrong conclusion after reading the Globe article. I've corrected the post. Sorry!

By Mollynotloggedin (not verified) | Wed, 05/28/2008 - 8:45am

We went to the Greater Boston Interfaith Organization's tenth-anniversary rally-type-event last night. Apparently it was FULL of terrorists. And here I thought they were just the Muslim delegates. Huh.

The REAL problem with the RR commercial..

By bobmetcalf | Wed, 05/28/2008 - 9:42am

Forget the alleged keffiyah, take a look at the drink itself.

In Boston DD iced coffee is served in a plastic
cup, which is then double-cupped into a styrofoam cup.
In the photo, RR is missing the outer cup....

Is this a secret signal to the Long Island based
checkered scarf-wearing Jihadists on Commonwealth Ave?

Idiotic!

By anon (not verified) | Wed, 05/28/2008 - 11:56am

I'm no fan of La Ray, but this is beyond moronic. I hope she sues Malkin et al for defamation - accusing a public figure of being a terrorist sympathizer on the grounds of her stylist's fashion choices is reckless conduct at the very least. Sue them, Rachel, please!

kaffiyeh

By anon (not verified) | Wed, 05/28/2008 - 5:47pm

The kaffiyeh was made famous by Yasir Arafat (correct spelling Yesyou Areafart)a man who claimed to be a freedom fighter for Palestinians but who in reality was a terrorist that would have killed as many Jews as Hitler if he had the brains and the resources. When confronted with the prospect of continuing to fight or stop fighting and create a prosperous democratice state he and his criminal friends chose to keep killing Jewish civilians. Some "freedom fighter".

So civilized people everywhere should be offended by the sight of this rag in a commercial ad. It should be no different than if she were wearing a cap with the skull of the SS or a swatstika.

So all these US soldiers who

By anon (not verified) | Thu, 05/29/2008 - 1:30am

So all these US soldiers who wear kaffiyahs in Iraq and Afghanistan are wearing the equivalent of a swastika?

You moron.

Nice diversion

By anon (not verified) | Thu, 05/29/2008 - 7:48am

I would have to say yes. Does that mean they are evil Nazis? No but you probably thought so anyway. Given where they are in harm's way amongst a muslim population I have no problem with them wearing one. Rachel Ray and Dunkin Donuts are hardly in the same situation.

Also for some reason people probably like yourself give the Palestinians moral cover for their outrageous behavior. So a kaffiyah is not widely seen as it should be - a modern day swatstika.

So you deny the facts?

- The rag is a symbol of PLO
- PLO, Hamas , etc. are like Hitler in that they would like to kill all the Jews living amongst them
- THerefore the kaffiyah is equivalent to a swatstika

I suppose you have some facts to dispute this? Or do you prefer to ignore reality and sling insults?

Faulty syllogism

By Ron Newman | Thu, 05/29/2008 - 7:56am

A terrorist wears X, Rachael Ray wears X, therefore Rachael Ray is (equivalent to) a terrorist?

Take a logic course.

Faulty Reading

By anon (not verified) | Thu, 05/29/2008 - 8:54am

I never said Rachel Ray is a terrorist.

Do you deny that the rag she is wearing in the ad is a kaffiyeh?

Do you deny that Arafat made it famous?

Do you deny that ARafat PLO, etc are terrorists that kill innocent Jewish civilians?

If so then why shouldn't a Jewish person object or be offended?

If you deny what I amn claiming with some facts then maybe I would agree that being offended by the rag is going overboard.

Offended as a Jew

By Ron Newman | Thu, 05/29/2008 - 9:17am

Quote:
If so then why shouldn't a Jewish person object or be offended?

As a Jewish person, I'm offended by your evident lack of logic and intelligence. I'm also offended that a Jew would marry someone as stupid as Michelle Maglalang.

If Baruch Goldstein wore a yarmulke while gunning down 29 Muslims in Hebron, does that mean I should never wear a yarmulke in public?

Doesn't Fly

By anon (not verified) | Thu, 05/29/2008 - 1:59pm

As a gentile I am offended by your defective argument that a Jew wearing a yarmulke gunning down 29 Muslims in Hebron is anything close to what the keffiyeh rag wearing Yassir Arafat had done to innocent Israelicivilians for years. I cannot believe that you are that stupid yet I am confronted with the reality that, yes, you are making that comparison so you must be that stupid.

Arafat wore khakis

By adamg | Thu, 05/29/2008 - 7:57am

Therefore, the Gap supports terrorism. Burn them!

Also, he famously carried a gun into the UN General Assembly.

Therefore, people with guns support terrorism. Burn them!

Oh, wait ...

Rejecting Reality??

By anon (not verified) | Thu, 05/29/2008 - 8:59am

By your post you are saying that the kiffeyeh has no more meaning to anyone than does a pair of pants or shoes or underpants.

Are you sure that is what you want to claim? Are you claiming that their is no link between the keffiyeh and Yasir Arafat?

Maybe you think there is a link but you don't care or think that Arafat was an OK guy?

Maybe you need to stick to mouthing Michelle Malkin sound bites

By adamg | Thu, 05/29/2008 - 9:09am

Oh, wait, that's what you're doing.

Arafat famously wore his keffiyeh ON HIS HEAD. Rachael Ray wore what looked like a chewed-up baby blanket on her shoulders.

By your reply, I take it you think all men who smoke cigars should be deported to Cuba because Fidel Castro was well known for smoking cigars. Maybe you think there is a link but you don't care or think that Castro was an OK guy?

No Cigar

By anon (not verified) | Thu, 05/29/2008 - 1:54pm

You know that more people than Fidel are famous for smoking a cigar. Red Auerbach, Winston Churchill to name a couple. So close, but no cigar. Can you name someone other than Arafart that is known to the public that always wears a keffiyeh? I don't think so.

Why is everyone so eager to deny the reality that Arafart is offensive and that it is reasonable for some people to be offended by this ad?

Is it because a right winger that you detest started the whole thing? Fine, but that does not change the facts..

Just wondering

By Gareth | Thu, 05/29/2008 - 1:56pm

Is Yassir Arafat's keffiyeh paisley?

More of an Italian-restaurant table cloth, I thought

By adamg | Thu, 05/29/2008 - 2:44pm

But what do I know? I thought Lawrence of Arabia was noted for his headcovering, too.

Chain-link

By Gareth | Thu, 05/29/2008 - 2:51pm

Yeah, but I'd guess our anon would say he's not 'known to the public.' If he knows who T. E. Lawrence was at all, that is.

And Arafat's keffiyeh looked kind of like a chain-link fence.

Susan Wornick

By adamg | Thu, 05/29/2008 - 2:59pm

No, she doesn't wear a keffiyeh, at least, not in public, but last night, while reporting on, what else, the Newton trolley crash, she looked like she was wearing part of a chain-link fence as a necklace.

You say potato

By KellyJMF (not verified) | Thu, 05/29/2008 - 3:12pm

When I was in high school (in the eighties), most of my Jewish friends spent at least one school vacation in Israel and they ALL came back with one of these scarves which they wore around their necks.

Good thing I didn't know they were terrorists back then but you've set me straight now!

Wearing a ski mask doesn't make you a bank robber if it's cold out.

Not even a keffiyeh!

By anon (not verified) | Thu, 05/29/2008 - 1:42pm

Ms. Ray is wearing a black and white paisley scarf with a fringe, that I believe is made of silk. So the silly argument that keffiyehs are the equivalent of swastikas isn't even relevant.

Perception is reality

By anon (not verified) | Thu, 05/29/2008 - 2:56pm

Yes it has been reported that it is a paisley scarf. Still looks like a keffiyeh so who cares? At least Dunkin Donuts had the brains to pull the ad since it does them no good to defend it. They are just trying to sell coffee.

Who's perception shapes your

By stephencaldwell | Thu, 05/29/2008 - 3:10pm

Who's perception shapes your reality?

I prefer to have my reality shaped by my perceptions. I don't perceive her scarf to be anything more than a covering for a cold neck.

I don't perceive contrails to be anything more than atmospheric water vapor.

The weirdest thing is

By Gareth | Thu, 05/29/2008 - 8:47pm

Michelle Malkin herself wears a keffiyeh sometimes.

Hypocrite.

So does Meghan McCain, the Republican candidate's daughter.

And Lauren Bush, Dubya's niece.

Fashion slut or terrorist? You decide.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
