I know the Newton trolley crash happened after work let out for the day on Morrissey Boulevard, and all the violence surrounding Gene Rivers happened, oh, days and days ago, and really, who cares about a city worker telecommuting from Venezuela, but was there really nothing else Kevin Cullen could have written about today except himself?
Being called soft by Boston magazine is like being called fat by Carmen DiNunzio, the 400-pound Mafia boss.
Thanks, Kevin, for explaining who Carmen DiNunzio is, because the sort of person likely to read your column these days probably isn't at all familiar with what's going on in Boston, given how rarely you write about it anymore.

Perhaps Boston Magazine's first clue was when Cullen listed his birthplace as "P.O. Box 470 Lynn, MA 01903"?
Or is that his work address?
Pot calling the kettle black
I sometimes think the Globe's Irish Affairs columnist is a waste of the space. But no more so than other Glob opinion columnists who get to put their opinions on the front page and call them "news..." not that I have anybody particular in mind.
That said, he's right that anybody from Boston ragazine calling his work crap is the pot calling the kettle black.
And this paragraph is worth the rest of the column to me.
Really, I think this ragazine should be forced by law to give up their title on account of defamation of character of the city. It makes us all look bad. How come New York Magazine and the New Yorker are both worth reading and all we have to show for ourselves is a glossy rag one step down from an in-flight magazine?
Adam, as much as I hate it
Adam, as much as I hate it when you rag on the Globe in general... Cullen, Abraham, and Walker are the worst. I'd rather read letters to the editor in the Metro than one of their columns.
Going at Boston Mag...
... is like a Red Sox playing in high school. He's going at one of the softest publications out there. And it's purely ego. Cullen fails to mention the columns that he has written that dispute people's assessment of him being a poor columnist for the Globe. He just whines and whines.

Ten bucks says an editor made him tack that explanatory clause onto the Carmen DiNunzio joke. I think it must be Globe style to haul out the dictionary any time they make a reference likely to be missed by more than ten percent of Bostonians with a faint pulse and a basic knowledge of English.
I, for one, am always glad to see media professionals wasting ink on their petty scraps with one another. It's a small step down the long, long road to making newspapers fun again.

Even if only in the sense that everything is relative, Cullen's not so bad. The Globe haplessly maintains its paper-of-record self-image, so I understand the instinct to take them to task when they spill so much ink on such little substance, but take aim at self-important McGrories whose bifocals can't focus on the "city" part of "City/Region."
Lissa's right -- the DiNunzio explanation was undoubtedly foisted upon us by the Powers that Be, and though I'm sure it made Cullen cringe, it's no hill to die for.
