is it real, or is it mockingbird?
I've got a local mockingbird that learned the car-alarm song. I don't know why that amuses me so much, because if it were an actual car alarm waking me up too early on a weekend, I would want to throw things at it.
Entertainment for Out of Town Visitors
I was walking through the linear park between Holland and Mass. Ave several years ago, Aussie friend in tow.
Suddenly, from of the shrubbery came a four part aria: the unmistakable "tune" of the multi-phase car alarms popular in the 1990s. Only it wasn't an alarm, but a birdsong imitation.We-wa we-wa, foooowhipp fooowhipp, brap brap brap brap, etc.
Aussie Friend: What the hell was that?
Me: An Urban Mockingbird
My kids also had a good time one summer recording higher-pitched noises that were odd or funny, and playing them in the windows of their bedrooms in hopes that mockingbirds would imitate them. They had a lot of fun in the neighborhood when they would hear one of their visitors.
Once again, thanks.
I am very, very glad to have read that as well.
