Rich marshy goodness

Cutler Park on the Dedham/Needham line lets you go deep into a marsh without getting stuck in mud - thanks to a boardwalk that meanders through the park, which consists mainly of a 700-acre marsh along the Charles River (and 128).

When I was a sprout my
When I was a sprout my father used to bring me to that pond to fish and ice skate. Cool place, even though it's right at an industrial park on one side.
Go early, go often
Just don't go at sundown. Oh my gawd, the mosquitoes and other swarming insects will eat you alive.
I wondered about that
We were there early afternoon, so only had the heat to contend with (and, yesterday, even that wasn't too bad). We also had one of those "small world" experiences when we looked up and saw Millennium Park like right there. We go there a lot, and I drive by the entrance to Cutler Park a lot, yet never realized that they're basically right next to each other.
My mistake
My life may only serve as a warning to others, but there are a couple of geocaches between Cutler and Millenium Parks. I chose to do the easier to access (and less marshy/wooded) ones at Millenium first one day. This left Cutler's cache(s) to the evening twilight. I got to where I needed to finally start checking my GPS for the correct direction and when I stopped to get a reading, it felt like my legs were still moving even though I was standing still.
I looked down and saw over a dozen flying things hounding my legs. I was so determined to get the cache, however, that I would check a reading while jogging in place. Then I'd head about as far as I thought I needed to go in the correct direction, stop, and jog in place again. It was a beast of a time, but I did finally retrieve the cache and with bugs in my face, legs, and arms I signed the log book and jetted back to the parking lot as fast as possible.
Ick. I still get the willies just thinking about that little foray. So, definitely one place where you're going to meet the flying fauna if you stay there too late in the day.
It's great from both ways
It's great from the Dedham boardwalk side (nice new boardwalk, beautiful views) and it's also great from the Needham side (vernal pools in spring, walks through a wooded edge). I have heard from people that have walked all the way from one end to the other. But yeah, bring that insect repellent, for sure.
