Somerville official throws up hands, quits LiveJournal

Tom Champion, the guy whose voice alerts Somerville residents to snow emergencies on robo-calls (which made him the first ever Massachusetts municipal lolcat), was an active participant in a LiveJournal Davis Square forum - up until people started calling a Somerville parking official a liar over some only-in-Somerville parking-ticket dustup. Now he's decided his energies are better spent elsewhere and LJ Davis Squarians are tearing into the person who started it all.

I work with municiple

By anon (not verified) | Fri, 07/11/2008 - 1:48pm

I work with municiple governments all the time, and Somerville is one of the best places to deal with.

If some bratty Somerville twit whos only been there for , let me check my watch, 5 minutes, doesnt like how the government works enough to drive away a public servant who actually spent time online talking to them about their problems (seriously what other city/town or anything has someone who sits online looking for how he can solve problems???) then I dont know what to tell them.

Well done spoiled Somerville kids!

the twit in question appears to be an unrepentant jackass about the whole affair. A banning is in order.

reasonable person discovers livejournal users suck, film at 11

By anon (not verified) | Fri, 07/11/2008 - 2:15pm

Good for him. Livejournal users are whiny, antisocial asshats who wouldn't say half the things they do if they were actually facing the person in the same room.

Check out the post by the dude who's got some tough-looking cartoon pussycat for is user icon, for some "I has a thesaurus" keyboard-only bravery!

cranky LJ ticket guy

By Lissa Harris (not verified) | Fri, 07/11/2008 - 2:29pm

Is clearly not a guy.

Just sayin'.

Changed

By adamg | Fri, 07/11/2008 - 2:40pm

Yep, as her profile states, she's clearly not a he. I got confused because, well, that avatarish photo looks to me exactly like Kim Jung Il eating a hot dog.

it does, that.

By Lissa Harris (not verified) | Fri, 07/11/2008 - 3:16pm

Hey, you think maybe Kim Jung Il is secretly a lesbian? The mind boggles.

Clearly?

By anon (not verified) | Fri, 07/11/2008 - 3:04pm

If that's not a dude eating that hot dog, someone is in need of a makeover. Either way, what an asshat.

Move on

By BStu | Fri, 07/11/2008 - 3:59pm

Yes, we get it. She doesn't meet conventional heteronormative standards for feminine appearance. Move on, already.

Thank You!

By anon (not verified) | Fri, 07/11/2008 - 2:29pm

I just read more and found out the guy also has a Facebook and apparently is very popular in Somerville, to the point where he is a mini celebrity over there. Wonders never cease.

ALSO he is 60, can write hilarious LOL cat entries relating to snow emergencies and was very down to earth. Most of the Somerville internets peoples seem to like him.

Except for one crazy hot dog eating woman "I thinks" who wouldnt back off. SHAME

you forgot, he's also "poly"

By anon (not verified) | Fri, 07/11/2008 - 4:30pm

It means someone from the north shore. Just kidding. I dunno either.

Poly Amory

By SwirlyGrrl | Fri, 07/11/2008 - 5:32pm

It means a person who is in voluntary sexual relationships with more than one partner, sometimes a network of partners.

Poly Pocket

By adamg | Fri, 07/11/2008 - 5:40pm

It means a person who is in involuntary pain because he or she has just stepped on more than one of these tiny dolls, sometimes even a network of their bedroom furniture.

THANK YOU ALL!!!

Gee the life and times of Somerville people. A lesbian attaking a Polymorphous guy resulting in him running off of LJ to get away from her and then all of her friends who also seem to be from all different walks of life take fire on her because they want to see more LOLCat announcements.

Time to stop spinning and go home to Marblehead lol

As someone who reads the site frequently without participating, it's really too bad this happened but I don't blame Tom Champion at all. He is one of the best civil servants I have ever seen in government. This individual pulled a hissy fit over an erroneous parking ticket. Tom tried to right the wrong but got the wrong information before correcting it, as could happen to anyone. The user went nuts and put Tom in an impossible position of having to publicly throw the parking clerk under the bus or take the hit himself. It's too bad the user could not just act like a grownup and accept that people sometimes make mistakes. And if he had a real problem, take it to your alderman and leave Tom out of it.

You know, I never asked Tom

By on_reserve (not verified) | Fri, 07/11/2008 - 4:28pm

You know, I never asked Tom to do anything.

How about getting your facts straight?

1. I made a PSA about tickets having been wrongly issued and encouraged people to appeal their tickets if they had been tickets. In this same post other Somervillians went off the deep end about my not having gotten the Parking Officer's badge number and I said that I didn't feel it was necessary to give the Parking guy a hard time:
Original PSA Post

2. Then, Tom made a post in which he claimed no wrong tickets had been issued at all (again, I never asked him to look into this) basically calling me a liar, in this same post he also managed to basically call the Davis Square LJ community ungrateful for not having gone to the Mayor's "office hour" on six hours notice:
Tom Champion's post with misinfo from T&P Office

3. Then, he sent me a personal message via LJ in which he made vague threats in my general direction:
Screencap of my LJ Inbox

4. Then, everyone decided to decide that it was "my fault" that Tom Champion deleted his LJ account. I don't suppose it could have anything to do with a previous incident where a woman made a post to the community about an attempted sexual assault and he posted saying that no police report had been filed when she *had* filed one and had to later retract his statement/apologize:
Tom Champion's apology

5. Last but not least -- attacks on my gender identity or fatness? Really? That's the best you could do?

they're usually sort of goth or sci fi.
they're different than swingers because they have different relationships outside of their marriage or relationship, while swingers do that together, and have one principle partner and other secondary ones. Polys have an almost equal relationship with each of their partners.
they have poly raves, and are slightly creepy/repulsive.

I've looked this thread up and down three times and have no idea what you're talking about. Nobody said anything about your weight or "gender identity" (there were some comments about the guy who made the "lolcat" image, cos, who is "poly")

He vs. she

By adamg | Fri, 07/11/2008 - 5:52pm

I originally called her a "guy," because I was sloppy - I didn't bother to check and made an assumption and was wrong.

By anon (not verified) | Fri, 07/11/2008 - 5:56pm

Look, I totally agree with most people that on_reserve is out of line and at fault for stirring up this drama but its pretty clear that

1. saying she looks like Kim Jung Il

and

2. If that's not a dude eating that hot dog, someone is in need of a makeover.

are nasty ways of saying that she looks like a dude and that isn't attractive

I don't see any attacks re: weight.

Kim Jong Il

By adamg | Fri, 07/11/2008 - 6:00pm

I admit that's part of the reason I thought she was a he. I was wrong about her being a he. I should stop looking at LJ avatars, or whatever they call them.

no harm intended

By Lissa Harris (not verified) | Fri, 07/11/2008 - 8:21pm

Hey, sorry for taking the bait on Adam's cheap Kim Jong Il shot. In truth, you look a hell of a lot more like my ex-girlfriend than like Our Dear Leader. *grin*

As much as we hate it when political types sidestep issues theres a reason for it. Theres always some wiseguy just waiting , waiting for you to make a mistake so he can pull a horn and spray you with a water gun.

Looks like at least this time the wiseguy got theirs.
