Moxie is quite good if you ask me. If I had to relate it to something, it is somewhat similar in taste to chinotto soft drinks that you'd find in Italy, but less bitter.

I like bitter Italian sodas in those bitty bottles. Gingerino is my fave, with its orange look, smell and taste. Moxie, on the other hand, is just nasty.

Moxie was once made in Jamaica Plain.

I tried Moxie about 15 years ago, and I am still traumatized by the experience.

I was on a road trip with a friends family and I ended up pciking up a can of this stuff thinking it was Orange soda (orange can, cool man on the front, sure thing) and ended up spitting it out as we left the store and began drinking out drinks. I was distraught (because 75 cents was allot to me at 10 lol) that I had some sort of renegade soda. Luckily for me my friends father is a HUGE fan of the stuff and wasnt aware they even had it, he happily switched his diet coke with my Moxie and it all worked out. Maybe he wasnt a fan of the stuff and just wanted to stop me from crying , I dont know, but either way he is one brave man lol

That was the only kind of soda my friend's mom used to buy, 35 or so years ago. So if you wanted soda at her house, that was the only option. (Likewise, at another friend's house, the only ice cream was maple walnut. Parents are funny.)

To me, Moxie tastes like I expect turn of the century elixers did.

Maybe they found that the soda and ice cream lasted longer if they were oddly flavored!

Different Than It Once Was

As a Moxie fan (I bet you all knew that...) I'd like to point out that the recipe is slightly different now than it once was. As with most soft drinks, the main sweetener these days is high fructose corn syrup, not sugar. For some drinks, that makes little difference. With Moxie's gentian root extract base, as strong as it is, I think it makes a huge difference.

I'm not saying that Moxie probably would have tasted one hell of a lot better to those who dislike it. But, for those of us who liked it to begin with, this made it less palatable.
