Where'd all the Reese's Peanut Butter go?

Riggs is on a quest to find the stuff, which suddenly disappeared from every Boston-area grocery store all at once - and is grateful the manager at the Prudential Shaw's took the time to listen to him complain:

... It annoys me to no end that Hershey's is ignorant of the issue. You think they'd notice that Boston grocers dropped their product. In fact, it makes me want to not buy their product (except it's Oh-So-Good). They have no solution, other than to tell me that, "in the last three months, it's been scanned into the following locations." ...

Peter Pan

By Suldog | Wed, 07/16/2008 - 9:56am

My favorite was Peter Pan. It dropped out of sight completely following the poisoning of a few jars, perhaps about a year ago now.

It's back in some stores...

... I've been able to get it in Waltham (Shaw's on River Street and Hannaford on Main) since January.

Weird Business Model

By Michael | Wed, 07/16/2008 - 10:31am

Guess they're focusing less on peanut butter and more on bus transportation in the Northeat.

I Always Wondered About That, Actually

By Suldog | Wed, 07/16/2008 - 11:50am

There are quite a few "Peter Pan" brands. Do they all pay a fee to the estate of J. M. Barrie?

Oh, and thanks for the tip. I'll have to check those shelves. I've been without my favorite brand for far too long.

Teddie

By Gareth | Wed, 07/16/2008 - 12:47pm

You are all a bunch of peanut butter heretics. Teddie is the One True Brand.

Sorry, Gareth...

By Suldog | Wed, 07/16/2008 - 1:41pm

... but partially hydrogenated vegetable oil, and sugar, must be in the mix. I don't eat anything that doesn't contain the possibility of killing me.

I agree except in rare cases

By anon (not verified) | Wed, 07/16/2008 - 1:53pm

I agree except in rare cases when the equivalent type of Smucker's 100% PB is on sale, then I switch to that.

For the 100% PB, the trick is to store it overnight upside down before you open it, then stick it in the fridge and you don't have to worry about mixing it.

Thank you

Thank you! I knew there was a better way.

Seel, that's a sign it's not going to be good

By bigdumptruck | Wed, 07/16/2008 - 2:43pm

If I have to go through all that trouble, it's not Jif-quality peanut butter. Peanut butter gives me really horrible headaches, so it has to be classic highly-processed stuff the few times a year that I eat it.

Teddie's PB

By Krissy (not verified) | Wed, 07/16/2008 - 2:08pm

I bought Teddie's because of the cute bear on the label...and it's now my fav brand. A nice snack for me is simply a spoonful of it. Mmmm...Teddie's...

Even better . . .

By Anne (not verified) | Thu, 07/17/2008 - 10:51am

A nice snack is a spoonful. A perfect snack is a spoonful with a couple of (dark) chocolate chips on top.

(I'm not really fussy about my PB. I just want its ingredients to be peanuts and salt - period. And chunky.)

Anne

Oh, No!!!

By Suldog | Thu, 07/17/2008 - 11:05am

In the poll, I forgot to even consider the "chunky vs. smooth" argument!

Smooth.

The problem with chunky

By Michael Kerpan | Thu, 07/17/2008 - 11:08am

The kind of bread it goes best with (taste-wise) gets ripped to shred when you try to spread it.

(My wife laughs at me when I voice this complaint)

You Tell Your Wife...

By Suldog | Thu, 07/17/2008 - 11:10am

... I've got your back.

I don't like chunky to begin with - if I want chunky, I'll just eat a handful of peanuts, thanks - but you're right. It rips some breads to shreds.

We used Teddie at the bagel place I used to work at

By got2trotlibrarian | Wed, 07/16/2008 - 3:55pm

and while it is tasty, it weirded me out that the cute bear on the label had fur the same color as the peanut butter and the actually name of the product was "Teddie." Hard to explain, but I always felt bad sticking my knife in the jar- sort of like I was gutting the bear.

Hey - what about Amazon? Would having it shipped periodically (if it's available) be worthwile to you?

Interestingly, they're out of stock too. But these guys specialize in regionally-unavailable foods, so I bet if you call, they'll know *why* it's out...
