Excuse Me?

"Suldog (who often posts "git yer own blog and off mah damn lawn")

Whuh? OK, I admit it. I'm thick. What in hell are you talking about?

As for the subject pertaining to Boston, see the thread "Where'd All The Reese's Peanut Butter Go?" If you've got a problem with discussing peanut butter, go there and diss Adam for bringing it up.

(Of course, I could get all "Nyah, Nyah! You'll have to have a REAL name soon!" but that would just be gratuitous.)

Actually, no.

By anon who loves Suldog (not verified) | Wed, 07/16/2008 - 8:41pm

Suldog (and Garrett, too, I have to admit. Wish HE would start a blog as I think he has a lot of good, interesting things to say. Also am tickled by how he chains his words together.) are two of my favorite commenters and are about two of the absolute least anal-gestapo types here. You're probably mistaking him (Suldog, that is - love his blog! Discovered it here!) for the not-quite got her meds tweaked right yet, handicapped (not Handicapped! Handi-Capable!) Lesbian "activist" social worker or maybe the "you can take the girl out of the trailer, but you can't take the trailer...etc" crank with PhDs from all the Ivies and secondary schools in the NE.

That said: Hannaford's has a storebrand peanut butter with no sugar and no trans fats. It's amazing. Since I don't have a car, it's hard to get to a Hannafords, so I just walk over to the Central Square co-op to grind my own. Love the smell. Love the taste. Love the mouth-feel. MMh.

Sorry for the wordiness. Sorry for the political incorrectness. Sorry for the bad punctuation.

I like Suldog - I think you

By anon (not verified) | Thu, 07/17/2008 - 2:22pm

I like Suldog - I think you have him confused with Gareth, who is quite cranky and brings little to the table other than a strong desire to play tummysticks.

Great poll, Suldog. As if we needed confirmation that this blog is frequented by a bunch of health food junkies/hippies - Teddie is winning! :)

I don't understand the fascination with Skippie, which tastes artificial to me - though I do love Jif, if I can't find Teddie. WholeFoods 365 brand is pretty good as well.

I have never tried Reese's peanut butter, sans the delicious chocolate "packaging."

By Dave | Wed, 07/16/2008 - 3:57pm

What does being a grown up have to do with liking peanut buttere -especially nowadays when it's practically a capital offense to bring a peanut product anywhere near a school?

And why is it "Teddie's" but not "Skippy's" and "Jif's"?

:-p

Admittedly, I'd want to forget all memories of nutritional yeast sandwiches, as well.

However, Comfort Food is a wonderfully universal topic.

Hmm...tell you what, since the issue seems to be 'Adult Tastes:" Australia's subsidized very heavily its current wine industry. Would love more advice about that. To keep stuff germane to the original topic: what (Southeast Coast?) white would you pair with my Teddie Thai Peanut Noodles?

Seriously. I'm not being snarky. What white would go well with rice noodles coated with peanut butter, sugar, rice vinegar, garlic, chili, shredded carrot and scallions?

The citrusey-ness (am trying to avoid the pretentious-sounding 'citrus notes') would offset the peanut fatiness really nicely.

Thanks! I'm a huge fan of Eastern French/Saar-Ruhr and even Eastern European Rieslings...didn't know of any good Australian ones, though. (Don't much like a lot of the CA/NY ones. Too sugary.)

Further good Kid/Adult Food Combos:

Chocolate (as dark as possible) and Scotch (or Irish) Whiskey.

A Guinness with the best Vanilla ice cream available locally float.

Cherries (fresh, pitted are my favorite) with a bit of leftover red wine and either vanilla ice cream or yoghurt

Bailey's Pudding Cake.

Course you don't. It's just like Naomi Klein not understanding how GWB could be elected, as nobody she knew voted Republican.

In a lot of schools, peanuts are banned due to the potential risk of allergies. In my facility, peanut butter isn't allowed for that reason. (Doesn't stop a lot of us from sneaking stuff in, though. Doesn't stop the vending machine from being stocked with snickers bars, either.)

Oh, chew on this

By adamg | Wed, 07/16/2008 - 10:48pm

I'm fully aware of peanut allergies: My daughter's best friend has one and, yes, most of the classrooms at her school now have a "peanuts banned" sign and, yes, we have to be careful when sending in brownies or other stuff like that.

So? Nice to know that you're willing to take a risk with the health of others. I'm willing to send the kid to school with a turkey sandwich instead and let her eat peanut butter at home.

By tblade | Wed, 07/16/2008 - 10:48pm

Good peanut butter (ie without sugar and hydrogenated oils) is very nutritious and offers the "good" monounsaturated fat which is burned as energy and promotes heart health and helps manage cholesterol. It's also a good source of protein.

Presuming no allergies, it's good for you and good for kids. You don't have to like it, but it does offer grown-up nutrition and health benefits.

PBJ on a mountain peak - ahhhhhhh, goodness

By merlinmurph | Thu, 07/17/2008 - 7:36am

Nothing like a PBJ after hiking to the top of a nice peak, sitting there checking the views out. PB has nothing to do with "growing up" or having more refined tastes.

Missing a choice

By cynical | Wed, 07/16/2008 - 3:56pm

Trader Joe's peanut butter is the best, and cheapest. If I can't get to TJ's and there's a PB emergency, then I will buy Teddie's (made right in beautiful Everett!).

My mom used to buy Teddie's when we were kids, which I thought was a complete scandal 'cause all the other kids got Peter Pan or Jif, and they didn't have to stir it first. Now I know my mom loved me more than their moms loved them. ;-P

Fluff Stuff

By Suldog | Thu, 07/17/2008 - 7:51am

MY WIFE and I attended the first one a while back. It was fun.

The oddest part of it - aside from the entire concept, I mean - was that I found a new snack that sounds absolutely disgusting, but is actually fantastic.

There was a fellow there handing out samples of his culinary invention which involved Fluff. It consisted of Fluff mixed with canned tuna and hot sauce, served on a saltine.

I know. It sounds amazingly gross. I tried it only so I could say that I had tried the most disgusting snack on the face of the planet. But it was one of the most delicious snacks I've ever had! I've since mixed up small batches of it at home and enjoyed it immensely.

Mea Culpa & A Serious Question

By Suldog | Thu, 07/17/2008 - 7:22am

Obviously, I missed some very important choices. My apologies to the Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, etc., fans.

Insofar as peanut allergies are concerned, does anybody here know why there are so many kids with them? What I mean is that I don't remember there ever being any kids keeling over from eating peanuts when I was a child. And everybody I knew ate PB&J, both at school and in my neighborhood, and every other attendee at Fenway bought a bag of the things.

Seriously - no snark intended - why is there a seeming increase in peanut allergies? Is it just reporting of incidents? Or is something else at work here? Anybody know?

Theory...

By Krissy (not verified) | Thu, 07/17/2008 - 8:24am

I read in article recently (maybe in Newsweek?) about how perhaps the large amount of peanut allergies these days COULD be because of all the antibiotics, antibacterial soaps, and overall germophobia our society has right now is damaging immune systems.

I may have written that wrong, but that was what I understood (and remember) from the article. And it was just a theory.

it's our sanitation

By AD (not verified) | Thu, 07/17/2008 - 10:44am

According to the scientist who was front-page on the Science Times (NYT Tuesday section last week, I think), it's that we no longer live with worms inside us.

too clean.

the theory is: the worms don't want to be rejected by your immune system, so they secrete stuff that calms it down--and the scientist (sorry, blanking on the name, maybe because he self-treated with them) thinks it "cures" allergies.

Including peanut ones.

well, long, long ago -

By sheenaspleena | Thu, 07/17/2008 - 11:19am

well, long, long ago - people ate mostly local foods

not so very long ago, people died from their allergies. EpiPens, etc are more prevelant now, as is allergy protocol.

and now, so many things are pre-packaged - even gummi bears come with the warning that there may be traces of peanuts in their products. A generation or two ago, there was less exposure to nuts - if you knew you were allergic, you could avoid them..it's not the same now.

it may be the same number of allergies, just more people (larger population rate), and more people surviving with their allergies.

it's not limited to peanut allergies...other diseases and conditions have had increased numbers, not necessarily rates, but more people, better diagnostic tools, and better awareness make it seem like there are increased rates

eating peanuts daily during pregnancy increases asthma in child

By Anonymous | Fri, 07/18/2008 - 12:10am

Pregnant women who eat peanuts or peanut butter every day increase the risk of their child developing asthma by up to 50%, Dutch researchers said in an article in medical magazine on Tuesday.

Epidemiologists from Utrecht, Groningen and Rotterdam analysed the eating behaviour of some 4,000 pregnant women and followed the progress of their children for eight years.

Careful ...

By Swirlygrrl not logged in (not verified) | Fri, 07/18/2008 - 1:32am

Urban populations in the study cities have greater access to peanuts as a cheap protein source than rural populations and are not exposed to the same endotoxin levels shown to prevent asthma development.

It would be interesting if they can confirm this in the birth cohort run by the Channing lab. I have a strong suspicion that it is a confounded study, knowing what I do about these cities.

Darn those uncontrolled variables!

By Gareth | Fri, 07/18/2008 - 7:16am

Can't everybody just eat peanuts equally? It would make science so much simpler! How unfair for poor people to eat more of cheaper protein sources!

It is a fascinating subject. Clearly, there has been an increase in allergic diseases such as asthma, and the suggestions are strong that maternal environment and diet may contribute to this somehow. It seems there's still a gap between understanding how the process may work and being able to develop an adequate response. What do pregnant mothers need? More yogurt? More fruit?

In any case, fewer peanuts seems unlikely to be the right answer.
