Ramirez roundup

It's Manny Madness Monday at Boston Sports Media Watch.

Don, who was at last night's game, wishes he'd had a BB gun to shoot at the pink hats, but, really, he should have taken some potshots at the ESPN announcers, who just would not shut up about Manny (when they weren't complimenting Bobby Abreu for being "a professional hitter," as opposed to all the other guys there, presumably jut playing for the hell of it). More ESPN stupidity. Castig and O'Brien never sounded so good.

Enough about Manny already....

By rebecca (not verified) | Mon, 07/28/2008 - 8:43am

Here's the thing -- the Manny drama is a complete and total creation of the media. They frenzy on this issue every time there's an option in his contract. They did this two years ago right up until the closing hour on the trade deadline - and they've been doing it this year since about 3.5 weeks ago.

It really drives me crazy -- Manny is a baseball player -- he's not a well spoken political figure, politician, world leader, or even business man. He's an athlete - and we pay him to be just that. We all know that he's a loose cannon when it comes to speaking his mind. And the media preys upon that, knowing that it will drum great controversy and things to talk about.

Only problem is -- Manny doing these things and not thinking before he speaks causes problems potentially within the clubhouse and management -- because he's reacting to the media, not his organization.

This issue of whether he stays or goes should not be brought up at this juncture of the season. Period. End of discussion. The media needs to MOVE ON.

mid-season Manny

is annoying.
This has been going on for a number of years...always close to August. People hate him, then he hits a few homeruns & everyone loves him again & all is forgiven.

A General Statement to People Who Hate "Pink Hats"

By bigdumptruck | Mon, 07/28/2008 - 9:18am

Shut the hell up.

How DARE you accuse me of not being a real fan simply because I own a pink hat. I am SO BLOODY SICK of people ragging on the "Pink Hats". You know NOTHING about me. I probably know more about Red Sox baseball than any number of people who you consider REAL fans because they wear a blue hat. I've had my pink hat for years. At my house we also have blue hats and red hats and a black one. Shall I call the hat police for a ruling on all those as well?

You sound like a complete tool for threatening violence against people simply because they chose to wear a hat in a color you do not approve of. Funny, I don't hear other ball clubs' fans bitching about this kind of thing. Yet another reason for the rest of the world to start calling Sox fans assholes? Thanks for helping the cause, Don.

tell me eight guys who have played shortstop for the red sox since 2000?

I suspect ...

By SwirlyGrrl | Mon, 07/28/2008 - 12:03pm

that Big Dumptruck could tell you all the shortstops going back to 1990 and before, from what she has posted in the past.

she is either looking it up online or calling her bloody husband.

Whatever

I was going to reply to you, and happened to see your follow up message before I started typing. If you were even a tiny bit polite, I would have responded, but it's obvious anything I say you'll turn around against me anyway. So whatever. HTH. HAND.

Actually, SwirlyGrrl

I'm going to say I couldn't, not without cheating. I could only come up with 4 or 5 back to 2000 (one I'm not sure was a full-time SS, but you know what, I also am not a sports statistician.)

I can tell you that growing up my favorite player was Jim Rice, and my friends and I went to a game when I was 10 and one friend almost fainted because she got Fred Lynn's autograph. We tried to get Dewey Evans' attention but couldn't. THAT was a great afternoon.

You know what's far worse than pink hats?

Whiny losers who get apoplectic over pink hats.

anonyankee has tickets to the series in the fall, and wants top dollar on StubHub for them.

Actually -- I wonder if this isn't the year....

...to be a Chicago fan.

Could there be a subway series?

I just can't see the Cubs hanging on to the end of the season, however.

Just media being media

Rebecca is fed up - with the media:

... Listening to Dennis & Callahan, and the Zone this morning really drove me crazy. ...

Redsock is fed up - with that segment of the media known as the CHB:

... First of all, the frenzy over MBM would not even exist if it wasn't for clowns like Shaughnessy trying desperately to stoke the ire of the fan base year after year after year. (Though to the fans' credit, they have resisted the media bait for most of Ramirez's eight years in Boston, usually cheering him wildly.) ...

Sux.

Manny more of a jerk than Mike Tyson?

By adamg | Mon, 07/28/2008 - 8:37pm

Red wonders what sort of jerks visit the CBS Sports Online site, where Ramirez was not only named to a list of Top 50 Sports Jerks, but ranked more of a jerk than Albert Belle, Scott Boras and, yes, The Convicted Ear-Biter himself.
