Say, where'd you get that sandwich?

If it's a party-platter sandwich from Roche Bros. or Sudbury Farms, and you got it between July 31 and Aug. 2, get a bag now and throw it out. The state Department of Public Health reports the sandwiches, typically sold in party platters, could contain an unlisted ingredient: Listeria monocytogenes.

Sample party platter of doom (from DPH):

Ick

Listeria does not affect most people, but can cause serious problems in the elderly, newborns and people with compromised immune systems, starting with flu-like symptoms, the state says. It can also cause pregnant women to miscarry.

The FDA says about 285 pounds of potentially infected sandwiches were distributed by World Class Canapes, Inc. of Wilmington.

This is the supermarket

This is the supermarket chain who sells deli meats as handfuls taken from pre-cut piles rather than slicing the items for individual customers.

Seems to be at the whim of the counter person

At least at the West Roxbury store; I've had orders sliced off one of those giant hunks of roast beef or whatever even when there's a giant pile of shavings right there in the display.

what's the problem with pre-sliced?

that doesn't mean the food is contaminated. It's the way grocery store delis do it here as a matter of course. Was odd to me at first, being used to specifiying what thickness I wanted, but I asked my locals and they were just like "that's just how it's sold". Don't know anyone who's gotten sick by the practice, and it does mean that less people have to run the slicing machine, which at it's best time is a danger to body parts.

Oh, the irony...

The DPH program I work for just decided today that we'd order up a bunch of platters from Roche Bros for our staff retreat.
