Bernstein's rumor is that Kerry gets the speech at the convention but not the VP, so yeah it could be true. The "rumor" - make that Wolfson's crazy rantings - that Kerry could be VP, um no.
Dumbest thing he could do
Pick someone who couldn't fight his way out of a paper bag politically. The smears worked so well against Kerry in 04, when the election was his to lose, because he was too much of a wuss to fight back.
Barack's not dumb. He'll pick someone who actually helps his ticket. Someone without a bunch of negatives and successful smear campaigns already stacked up against him. Someone who can fight... becuase it's going to get ugly.

I don't think that Kerry would pull in any constituency that Obama doesn't already own and Hillary Clinton doesn't have for that matter.
He sorely needs somebody that speaks high-school-educated working class baby-boomer. I think Jim Webb would be a strong choice for that.
