Oh, sure, you're thinking Harvard Square, outside the Au Bon Pain, right? Would you believe Chinatown Park, on the Greenway? Only, as Harvey Blume reports, they play Chinese chess, or Xiangqi.

The only place I have seen chess played outside, in the city of Boston, is on Warren Street in front of the Dudley Square library.
