And were they black?

Why were three helicopters buzzing Davis and Union squares around 6 this morning?

House fire

There was a triple decker in Somerville on fire. The morning news crews were covering it. I noticed the 'breaking news' announcement on Fox around 6:15 this AM.

So they weren't black helicopters

Just boring old news choppers in search of some of that burning-triple-decker footage we love so much ...

Weird.

No one on LiveJournal has a TV?

OMG IT SCARED MY CAT ETC ETC ETC BLAH BLAH WOOF WOOF

It could very well be these are the people who tell you with dripping smarm that they Don't Own A TV.

Or it could very well be these are people who have grown accustomed to the Internet providing instant information so that the first thing they think of when confronted with the unknown is to Ask LiveJournal.

Too bad when it comes to just-breaking events, this line of questioning doesn't often work. (And then again, these can be the same people who post OMG ITS SNOWING!!!11 for even the third big snowfall of the season, so whatever.)

I find local news spreads

I find local news spreads faster by tv, national news spreads faster by internet.

Im definitly not one of those "I dont own a tv guys" but I dont get tv at work and I get very bad local reception at home so I am always running about 5 hours behind when it comes to local news (until this site has it, or Boston.com or some other site.) I get some channel from South America that gives me the news from like Argentina, but I cant sit down and watch WBZ TV 4 without snow and scratchy sounds lol.

Then again my first instinct when I hear a black helicopter isnt "oh my gosh its the feds", rather I just assume its just another fire or a ship hitting some bridge.

Have TV, don't watch local news in the morning

Honestly, it would never occur to me to turn on a TV to answer a question like that, and especially not Fox25. I looked at Boston.com, BostonHerald.com, SomervilleJournal.com, and TheSomervilleNews.com. Finding nothing, it seems reasonable to turn to a local LJ community for answers.

So next time, turn on the TV. Glad to help.

I didn't hear the choppers, but part of the traffic report on NECN right when I got up and turned on the TV was mention of the fire in Somerville.

Considering that local TV news beat themselves silly trying to put more "news you can use" in the morning (doesn't one of them start at 4 a.m.??), maybe that would be a more fruitful action than posting something to the web and hoping someone else knows.

NECN requires cable

which a lot of people don't have. Also, people who aren't driving tend not to pay attention to traffic reports.

I generally don't expect TV news (or WBZ or WBUR radio) to provide hyper-local coverage of my neighborhood. They have a whole region to cover. Neighbors online, and the websites of weekly local papers, often do a better job of that.

So what?

The station I happened to learn about the fire isn't the point. It seems several stations had coverage of it because there were apparently several choppers up. That particular bunch of LiveJournal folk seemed content in trying to figure out what's going on by merely looking out the window.
