Stop & Shop to stop selling everything but Kellogg's Corn Flakes

New vs. oldStop & Shop today unveiled a new logo, which to my untrained, non-graphical-design eye is very similar to the stylized cornflakes logo, if squashed and re-shaped a bit to make it look more like a goose that's gotten trapped in a giant grapefruit.

Stop & Shop says the new logo is part of an effort to make shopping "easier and quicker." That would certainly lend credence to my theory - if you can only buy one thing at the store, you're not going to spend much time there. Channel 4 also reports

:

These changes include scanning items as you shop, weighing and pricing produce yourself and creating kid-friendly isles that are free of candy and tabloid magazines.

Kid-friendly isles! Like Martha's Vineyard?

Guh?

Kids care about tabloids?

The logo will change my shopping experience??

Someone is just trying to justify their super expensive marketing focus group and graphic design budget. I'm surprised part of their "new" front isn't to change their name to Yield & Shop. I'd feel like they were interested in shortening my shopping time if they had a name like that instead!

Let's compare:

Stop & Shop - We believe our shoppers hate being here, so we want to get them out as fast as possible with scanning while you go and making them price their own produce at the shelf.

Wegman's - We believe our shoppers love our store and so we put in more choices for them to look through and hold social events like wine tastings.

Hmm, I think they're both right.

You obviously haven't been to the Mega-Mega-Mega Stop & Shop

By adamg | Wed, 08/20/2008 - 4:40pm

The one in Dedham. Why, it has a Dunkin' Donuts built right in! About the only other thing that would be better would be the "Hispanic! Hispanic! Hispanic!" and "Kosher! Kosher!" signs the Mega-Mega-Mega Star Market down the road has in its freezer department (because they never fail to crack me up).

Hispanic! Hispanic! Hispanic!

So glad I'm not the only one that ever noticed that...

Reminds me of Family Guy

The one where Lois runs for mayor, and Adam West goes for the Hispanic vote:

"Adam West likes to eat food grilled in aluminum foil."

The old logo says RED Stop

By ShadyMilkMan | Wed, 08/20/2008 - 5:05pm

The old logo says RED Stop and Green Shop , makes perfect sense and seems efficient, which is how I always felt about Stop and Shop. This new logo concerned me because it looks like they kept the traffic light concept, but instead they blew one up and let the half circles land where they may.

Dreadful logo, ugh...

By FlyingToaster | Wed, 08/20/2008 - 7:13pm

... but I actually like some of the store changes -- especialy the scan-as-I-go into the green logo bag (or, more often, the stroller shopping bag).

I still buy more at Hannaford (right brands, lower prices), but with two Stop and Shops within a mile, I guess I'll have to get used to the sad, ugly new logo.

Are they perhaps the Isles of Misfit Toys?

The long arm of Ahold?

By tjarrett | Wed, 08/20/2008 - 8:23pm

I just assumed they were picking up some of their corporate parent's branding, the same way that Citizens Bank started incorporating the RBS widget in their signage. The "cornflake" symbol isn't one of Royal Ahold's icons, but I think it's the same corporate font.

And since even after they closed for weeks to remodel, I still can't find what I want in the Arlington Stop & Shop, I've pretty much decided that their branding continues to be irrelevant to me.

The Stop & Shop on Valley St

By jasminenh | Wed, 08/20/2008 - 8:31pm

The Stop & Shop on Valley St in Manchester has all those Ethnic! Signs! as well. I wonder how much they are paying the marketing genius who came up with this idea? Their former logo is pretty well branded throughout New England, why change?

Why change it?

The (old) Stop & Shop logo is instantly recognizable, and the red traffic light goes with the word Stop. What was wrong with it that they needed to change?

An old joke

By timlav | Wed, 08/20/2008 - 10:43pm

What do you get when you cross Stop & Shop with A&P? (Of course, you have to be old enough to remember A&P to get it.)

Stop & P! Ha!

I always liked that joke, and I would be reminded of it when I used to go into the A&P in Dennisport (the last one I knew of to hang on years after most had closed).

That joke ranks right up there with: How do you make antifreeze? Take away her nightie! Ha!

(I still remember exactly where I was when I heard those jokes the people remember where they were when they heard Kennedy was shot.)

An old fav of mine as well.

A&P is actually still alive

By Mediacrity | Thu, 08/21/2008 - 1:50pm

A&P is actually still alive and kicking in NY/NJ. They sold off their New England division not too long ago (within the past 10 years) but the company has not closed.

BAH. This was supposed to be in response to the above.

Boston's last A&P

By Ron Newman | Thu, 08/21/2008 - 2:10pm

was in the South End, around Tremont and Herald streets. It closed and was replaced by a Wollaston's market, but that also eventually closed. I'm not sure what's in the space now.

A&P Products

To bring this somewhat full circle, A&P's coffee brand, 8 O'Clock, is available at most Stop & Shop locations in both ground and whole bean varieties!
