New Rozzie Chinese takeout place won't leave you hungry

One thing Roslindale doesn't lack is Chinese take-out places. So it was kind of surprising to see yet another one open up, this one at the fortuitously numbered 888 South Street, where Tex's used to be, across from the old Longfellow School.

The other day, I gave Hong Kong Cafe 888 a try for lunch.

For $6.35 (including tax), I got a huge container of "chicken and cashews," which really should be renamed "Lots of carrots and celery with some chicken and cashews thrown in." Still, add in the three Peking raviolis that came with it, and it was really enough for two people. It was decent enough, with some spice I couldn't name making it pleasantly different from your basic Chinese meat-in-brown-sauce dish. And the raviolis were good enough I'm glad I didn't have to share them.

However, the overwhelming amount of carrots and celery should have tipped me off what dinner would be like. The main dishes we got were basically meat in brown sauce, with, again, tons of vegetables, only this time really no different from the brown-sauce food you'd get at most other Chinese takeout places in the area. But as with lunch, the portions were huge. It took serious work lugging the bag with what I thought was enough food for three, and the containers of wonton and egg-drop soup were enormous for the prices (but, again, with the vegetables; I've never before had wonton soup with broccoli and peapods in it).

If you live in the immediate vicinity, Hong Kong Cafe 888 will save you a trip. But if you're driving, anyway, I'd still recommend Golden House, on Washington at Metropolitan as the, well, gold standard of Roslindale Chinese take-out places.

One puzzling thing about the place is the map on its menu. Bay Colony? Do they mean the Old Colony Railroad? And if so, why are they using a map from the 1940s?

Wha?
