Everybody into the pool: When will the first truck be peeled back like a sardine can on Storrow Drive?

Your guess?

Last year:
1:30 p.m., Saturday.

Dagnabbit!

By SwirlyGrrl | Tue, 08/26/2008 - 8:00am

I was just about to write up and post that!

Ah well ... I suspect it will be around 2 pm Friday 29 August myself.

Friday is too soon

By anon-a-mouse | Tue, 08/26/2008 - 8:14am

Move-in day is Monday, I am going with Sunday, 11:30am.

You miss a key point

By 02132 | Tue, 08/26/2008 - 8:26am

Move-in day may be Monday for many, but most colleges allow incoming Freshman and transfers to come in early, or at least the very first day of move-ins. Those cats are the ones who don't know the area, stop in rotaries, brake for pedestrians, and shear off truck tops under bridges.

ANd you miss a bigger point

By anon-a-mouse | Tue, 08/26/2008 - 1:17pm

Freshmen live in dorms that are furnished and don't drive moving vans to move in.

As someone...

By 02132 | Tue, 08/26/2008 - 2:28pm

As someone who helped move people into the dorms at UMass-Amherst for a few years, I can say with complete surety that you are wrong.

Lightning strikes twice?

By Michael | Tue, 08/26/2008 - 8:19am

Put me down for 1:30 Saturday.

10:00am Saturday

By 3.14159 | Tue, 08/26/2008 - 8:21am

5-day forecasts are saying rain later on Saturday, so if that holds then I think people are going to get an early start. 10:00am Saturday.

got lucky

By 02132 | Tue, 08/26/2008 - 8:27am

I was lucky last year, as I got to see the pop-top truck up close as I drove by a few minutes after it happened, but just before Storrow completely turned into a parking lot. I laughed out loud when I saw it. If I wasn't driving, I may have even pointed and laughed Nelson-style.

This year, I don't think we make it to lunchtime without an incident. 11 AM Saturday is the time I'm going with. Also, the bridge stays undefeated.

My guess is

And it will be glorious.

Saturday @ 1:20 pm

By Slimbru | Tue, 08/26/2008 - 9:30am

Ahhh, reminiscent of the old "Big Bucks for Stuck Trucks" contest.

Put me down for Saturday @ 1:20 pm.

Driver will be a Yankees (or Giants) fan.

;-)

Saturday...

By Erik | Tue, 08/26/2008 - 9:37am

4:00 PM. Trying to get the truck back before the extra charge hits.

Technicality

By jdj | Tue, 08/26/2008 - 10:56am

Does it count if an overheight vehicle slams on its brakes before the bridge, then causes a traffic jam while it reverses off of Storrow? Or does it need to make contact with the bridge? ;)

I'll go with 2:59 PM on Friday.

I dont think that should

By ShadyMilkMan | Tue, 08/26/2008 - 11:05am

I dont think that should count. After all they were too stupid to read the signs telling them not to go down there, but smart enough to be able to figure out the sheer impossible geometry of trying to fix their box truck underneath that over pass.

Gotta be Epic Truck Fail

Saturday 3:48

Saturday at 10:30 am

By Spatch | Tue, 08/26/2008 - 11:10am

My gut says Saturday at 10:30 am. Then again, my gut also once said chipotle barbecue potato chips was a good idea.

But hey, long weekend, Saturday's going to be a true zoo. I shall be hiding inside and enjoying not having to be on any roads.

Saturday, 7:20 PM

By Suldog | Tue, 08/26/2008 - 11:14am

I think the combination of expected rain, twilight, lots of traffic, and out-of-town college students adds up to poor visibility of warning signs and a pop-top truck in the early evening.

and the Sox are in town all weekend

By fenwayguy | Tue, 08/26/2008 - 2:38pm

'Nuff said: Take the train.

Or bike or rollerskate

By Ron Newman | Tue, 08/26/2008 - 2:48pm

Preferably along the Charles River paths, so you can watch all the fun on Storrow and Memorial Drives without actually getting caught in the resulting traffic jams.

Do We Have a Prize?

By SwirlyGrrl | Tue, 08/26/2008 - 11:15am

Any ideas? Anything anybody doesn't want?

how about...

By Anonymous | Tue, 08/26/2008 - 11:19am

an old hubcap is always a good prize

or, slightly more appropriately...

By Spatch | Tue, 08/26/2008 - 11:20am

...a poster of Max Headroom.

Awesome idea SPATCH

By Anonymous | Tue, 08/26/2008 - 11:30am

That's almost enough

By Kaz | Tue, 08/26/2008 - 2:57pm

That's almost enough of a prize for me to sign up for 5 PM tonight in the pool, go out, rent a truck in an hour, and drive it straight into the first bridge I can on Storrow!

Not as good as a Max Headroom poster ...

By adamg | Tue, 08/26/2008 - 11:55am

But I still have a stuffed e. coli bacteria (a few times actual size, natch). My wife would LOVE it if I finally got rid of this thing.

For that matter, I still owe Spatch one of these cuties from the last time we had a pool on something (so send me your address and make my wife happy).

Second place prize?

By Anonymous | Tue, 08/26/2008 - 12:09pm

a stuffed e. coli bacteria

It really should be a stuffed bedbug

By Arborway | Tue, 08/26/2008 - 12:49pm

After all, many of them are headed to Allston.

Perfect

By Gareth | Tue, 08/26/2008 - 1:01pm

call it a back to stool prize

We could always use more bacteria around here

By Spatch | Tue, 08/26/2008 - 12:54pm

Sending an email now!

Adam, I didn't know this was that kind of website...

By eeka | Sat, 08/30/2008 - 1:27pm

(so send me your address and make my wife happy).

*ahem*

Darn, someone took my guess

By faegirl | Tue, 08/26/2008 - 1:22pm

So I'll say, 10:15 AM Saturday

:)

Which school?

By cynical | Tue, 08/26/2008 - 1:53pm

I say we also speculate about which area college the offending truck driver will be attending this fall.

50 / 50 chance of it being

By Arborway | Tue, 08/26/2008 - 11:49pm

50 / 50 chance of it being BU or BC related, with the comedy Northeastern option always a possibility.

I'll stoop to say..

By shane_curcuru@d... | Tue, 08/26/2008 - 2:03pm

.. Thursday by 11:30am, and not a U-Haul, and it will be a first year student.

Or you can read the punishing version if you prefer low humor. Aaaah, must go find some of those old Max videos now...

I'm going for the Price Is

By stygmata | Tue, 08/26/2008 - 3:08pm

I'm going for the Price Is Right strategy (get close without going over) and go for 12:01 a.m. Saturday. This year it'll be due to hangover or sleep deprivation.

*SPECIAL REPORT*

By ShadyMilkMan | Wed, 08/27/2008 - 8:49am

There was a stalled out UHaul truck on Storrow Drive today, immediatly after the Mueseum of Science merge, in the right hand lane of traffic. This stopped truck seemed to be responsible for backing traffic up for almost a mile. It appears that the truck was in the right hand lane but wanted to cross three lanes of traffic to take the exit that was twenty feet diagnally away from it. Needless to say that wasnt happening. The matter remained unresolved as I drove by. Its only a matter of time now...

In other news the left hand lane at the Fenway/Kenmore exit on Storrow was closed for an undisclosed reason and Harvard University had people power washing its sidewalks along Storrow drive. There was also a sighting of a grown man riding a bicycle on the sidewalk with a bright orange and yellow safety vest, and another grown man in a suit rollerblading with a suitcase.

Well? Did *anyone* sardine their rental?

By shane_curcuru@d... | Wed, 09/03/2008 - 11:06am

I find it hard to believe the truck rental companies escaped the weekend unscathed, except for the beautiful picture of two U-Hauls in love on that Allston street. Anyone have a report here?
