Firetruck hits car in Dudley Square

Around 11:30 p.m., Wednesday, at Warren and Moreland streets. A witness reports the truck was headed outbound, the car crossing from Moreland, was hit on the right side, spun around, its trunk hit a light pole. No word on injuries.

I certainly have no idea what happened in this particular case--but I am sure we have all noticed the reluctance of drivers in the city (where I drive) to pull over when an ambulance/firetruck comes by. Sometimes it seems like people are afraid to violate traffic laws (say, pull into an intersection) in order to make room for the emergency vehicle, and sometimes the motivation, or lack thereof, is harder to pinpoint. But I see it every time the sirens come through.

People are supposed to pull over and make room for an emergency vehicle (i. e., fire engine, ambulance, police car), to go through, and, when people don't do that, they themselves are in violation of the law.

Erring on the side of caution, by looking both ways when crossing an intersection, whether the light's green or not, for example, makes great, good sense.

Come to think of it, I once saw a police car, with the siren and beacons flashing, that was forced to drive totally into the oncoming lane because people absolutely refused to cooperate by pulling more over to the side of the street. It 's a good thing that there were no oncoming cars, because there would've been a fatal car crash otherwise.

I see it all the time. Sirens screaming from behind me at a red light, and the drivers up front refuse to move to let them through. Often, there are no cars coming the other way, so there's no excuse. Between them and the people who have to run red lights so that they won't be the first person to get stopped at the light, there's a special place in hell for them.

There is no stop sign on Moreland.

The sight lines are not very good for this intersection from this street.

It almost looks as if Moreland is one-way in the opposite direction from the purported direction of the car's travel.

While it looks like the car driver is technically at fault, it is really hard to say that the driver should have seen the firetruck coming.

There is no stop sign because there are multiple traffic lights. Moreland is a two way street. And commenting on sight lines, with nothing more than google's "street view" to work with, is a bit is a reach.

Most likely the car had a green light. But there were two fire engines, both with sirens. I heard the sirens for a while before I heard the crash. So I can't believe the driver of the car could have not heard them.

That being said I think it is still the responsibility of the person driving through the red light,in this case the fire truck driver, to slow down to the point where they can avoid an accident. Not sure if this is true, or just common sense.
