New bike racks sprout in Dorchester

Just like the city promised, DotBike reports.

yeah, there's one in JP, too

and I do mean one...well, okay, maybe that's a slight exaggeration, but in all of "downtown" centre street, there's only one that I can remember, and it's in front of JP licks, which is silly, because JP Licks lets people lock up to its big huge fence (in fact, I suspect it is why it's there. And probably to keep little ones from running out into the street.) It's the easiest place in all of JP to find a lockup space for your bike.

You know what I'd like to see? Legislation, state-wide, requiring that every parking meter have a bike lock-up loop installed...and that every municipal lot have the same number of free bike parking spaces as pay car spaces.

And meanwhile, let's nix this rent-a-bike-run-by-the-city bullshit. It's just an attempt to get bikers into stuffing the city coffers like drivers have to (excise tax, parking tickets, meter feeding, etc), rather than providing a service...

Wha?

Oh, the city is going to force people to rent its bikes instead of using their own? I thought it was meant for people like me, who don't own a bike but who might want to rent one for the day, but silly me.

oops

Should have provided some context. A news story a couple of weeks ago, in practically the same breath as talking about the need for bike lockups, went off on bike rental programs, with a lot of quotes from councilors and the likes.

It was pretty clear between-the-lines that they felt licensing a bike rental firm (and getting money from them) was a solution to this whole "people who ride bikes want a place to lock their bike up" "problem" :)
